MIC passes special resolution on merit system, delegates told to behave
The MIC Annual General Assembly today passed a special resolution urging the government to review the merit system for admission into government universities as it had resulted in lower number of Indian students gaining admission.
"We appeal to the public universities to remedy the situation by giving Indian students additional seats this year," MIC party deputy president S Subramaniam said when tabling the resolution.
According to a Bernama report, the issue was highlighted by party president S Samy Vellu in the media recently after it was found that the percentage of Indian students entering public universities declined from 7.8 per cent last year to 4.7 per cent this year due to admission being based on the merit system.
This year only 1,500 Malaysian Indian students were given seats at universities from the 2,500 students who were said to be eligible, added the news agency.
