Several Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) students who are facing disciplinary action for breaching university regulations are still in the dark over the disciplinary proceedings.

A source told malaysiakini today that only one of the three hearings scheduled for Tuesday was held despite the panel and 11 affected students being present.

However, the source added, the committee had reserved its findings on the case to an unannounced date.

The hearing was held for two students — former UTM students representative council president Mohd Mushriff Abdullah and committee member Ng Tee Neng — who are facing the book for speaking to the press on the alleged irregularities regarding last November's campus election.

The duo are also facing several other charges in relation to their complaints about the election.

Apart from this, the only other progress on Tuesday was when the disciplinary committee sent three representatives to talk to four other students to find out further details on their alleged wrongdoings

The four have been charged with 'improper behaviour' in demanding to meet Education Minister Musa Mohamed to highlight the alleged discrepancies in the campus election..

Seven other students are charged with a similar offence when they demanded to meet deputy vice-chancellor Prof Mohd Mansor Abdullah over the same matter

Election grouses

The students claimed that ballot boxes were tampered with during last November's campus election and nominations of several pro-establishment candidates were made under questionable circumstances.

Nevertheless, the source added that a university official assured the students that they could obtain their examination results, which was withheld pending their hearing, within this week.

Last Thursday, six students were found guilty of violating campus regulations when they brought their complaints concerning the campus election to the attention of the Malaysian Human Rights Commission or Suhakam.

Students Yeo Tung Siong, Chong Wai Kuen, Lim Chong Hwee, Hwa Ser Piaw, Mohd Ariffin and Ng were fined RM200 each and given a stern warning by the UTM disciplinary committee.

A separate hearing involving eight students charged with organising an illegal gathering on campus pertaining to the same issue was also conducted on the same day with results pending until next week.
