PAS president Fadzil Mohd Noor, who had a coronary bypass operation last Monday, is showing signs of improvement, according to a statement from Hospital Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (HUKM) today.

The hospital said the 65-year-old opposition leader was responding by opening his eyes when he is called.

However, he is still being monitored closely by cardiologists at the hospital's Intensive Care Unit (ICU), the statement said.

Meanwhile, Fadzil's political secretary Dr Hatta Ramli described his condition today as "encouraging".

Fadzil's doctors have previously said that due to his previous health record, his "post-operative recovery is expected to be slow and complex".

Work stress

Fadzil, who is also Pendang MP, had to miss the new Parliament session which started today.

While his party's duties have been temporarily assumed by PAS deputy president Hadi Awang, there are no moves yet to appoint anyone from the party or the opposition Barisan Alternative front as the acting Opposition Leader.

However, BA MPs are meeting later today to discuss if there is a need to make such an appointment, especially since the duration of the present parliamentary sitting is only for two weeks.

Fadzil's health condition is believed to have deteriorated due to work stress, especially after attending the party's annual general meeting in Kelantan early this month.
