Decision on Anwars appeal against corruption verdict Wednesday
updated version
Anwar's lawyer Sankara Nair said he had received a fax from the court registry this morning confirming the date.
The court reserved its judgment on the appeal on April 2 after it heard submissions from the prosecution and Anwar over eight days.
Chief Justice Mohamed Dzaiddin Abdullah, who heard the appeal with Chief Judge of Sabah and Sarawak Steve Shim and Federal Court judge Haidar Mohd Noor, said then that the court needed more time to deliberate on the matters raised.
The appeal is the final legal avenue open to Anwar, who was found guilty of corruption and sentenced to six years' imprisonment by Kuala Lumpur High Court judge S Augustine Paul on April 14, 1999. Anwar is also to serve a separate nine-year sentence for sodomy.
"Based on the experience and seniority of the lawyers representing Anwar, we are expecting an outright acquittal," said Sankara at a press conference in his office in Kuala Lumpur.
Anwar to be informed
He said that if the decision is favourable to Anwar, the defence may consider submitting a fresh application for bail.
Sankara added that he would go to Sungai Buloh prison this afternoon to inform Anwar about the latest development.
Also with Sankara at the press conference was Anwar's brother, Rusli who told reporters that his family members are not hopeful that "Anwar (would) get the real justice he deserved".
"We can only pray that the court will give a fair decision. We also pray that the judges are not pressured by any individuals or politicians," he added.
