DAP wants Keadilan stand on Islamic state
The DAP has welcomed the PRM stand against an Islamic state and is urging Keadilan to make a clear stand on its position as well.
DAP chairperson Lim Kit Siang said today that he was glad PRM has finally made its stand clear on the matter. At the PRM 35th congress in Kuala Lumpur yesterday, the party declared that it was against the Islamic state concept proposed by PAS
"After the 1999 general election, DAP had sought to resolve its fundamental differences with PAS on the Islamic state issue and to get the Barisan Alternatif (BA) to adopt a stand which is compatible with democracy, pluralism, human rights, women's rights, social tolerance, development and modernity, in keeping with the Malaysian constitution and the 1999 BA common manifesto," Lim said.
"However, we did not get much help from PRM and Keadilan and it is now history that the DAP decided to pull out of BA last September because of irreconciliable differences with PAS on the Islamic state issue."
Important basis
The DAP leader hoped that Keadilan would also make its stand known on the issue, describing this as an important basis of future cooperation among opposition parties.
On the tabling of the Syariah Criminal Bill in the Terengganu state assembly yesterday, Lim said that it had destroyed all credibility of the 1999 BA common manifesto "Towards a Just Society".
"It is a clear violation of the pledge by all the subscribing parties to the common manifesto to uphold the fundamental principles in the Malaysian Constitution.
"Nobody in PAS, whether at national or state level disputes that the Hudud Bill violates human rights and discriminates against women," Lim added.
