Early 1997: Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Anwar Ibrahim is accused of sexual misconduct. The matter was brought up before Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad and in July 1997. Mahathir announces publicly that there is no truth to the allegations.

1998, June: Allegations of sexual misconduct are again raised, in a book entitled 50 reasons why Anwar cannot become PM .

1998, July: Anwar's friend S Nallakaruppan is arrested under the Internal Security Act (ISA) and went on trial on charges of illegal possession of firearms, which carry a mandatory death penalty.

1998, Sept 2: Anwar is sacked from his deputy prime minister and finance minister posts for alleged sexual misconduct.

1998, Sept 3: Anwar is sacked from his position as deputy president in Umno by party president Mahathir. Anwar begins his reformasi campaign to combat the evils of "corruption, collusion, nepotism".

1998, Sept 14: Anwar's adopted brother Sukma Darmawan Sasmitaat Madja and Pakistani friend Dr Munawar Ahmad Anees are arrested.

1998, Sept 19: Sukma and Munawar are each sentenced to six months in jail after admitting they allowed Anwar to sodomise them.

1998, Sept 20: Anwar is arrested under the ISA which allows for indefinite detention without trial.

1998, Sept 24: Police say Anwar is "safe and sound" in custody, in response to fears of his safety since his lawyers have been denied access to him.

1998, Sept 29: Anwar is slapped with 10 charges of corruption and abuse of power. He faces nine charges at the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court and one more at the Petaling Jaya Sessions Court.

Anwar appears in court for the first time after his ISA arrest. His black eye and other injuries shock the world. He pleads not guilty and claims trial.

1998, Nov 2: Anwar's charges are brought up to the Kuala Lumpur High Court and he faces four initial charges. He stands accused of 'corrupt practices' and is charged under the Emergency (Essential Powers) Ordinance 1970.

1998, Nov 9: Nalla's lawyer Manjeet Singh Dhillon files an affidavit in the High Court alleging that Anwar's prosecutors offered to consider trying his client on lesser charges should he co-operate in implicating Anwar.

1998, Nov 28: Based on Nalla's affidavit, one of Anwar's lawyers, Zainur Zakaria, objects to the prosecutors. Presiding judge S Augustine Paul finds this an interference to justice and asks for an apology.

1998, Nov 30: Zainur refuses to apologise and is sentenced to three months in jail for 'contempt of court'. Justice Paul also orders the arrest of Manjeet, who is eventually let off the hook after he apologised to the judge.

1999, Jan 5: Attorney-General Mohtar Abdullah blames police for Anwar's injuries in custody.

1999, Jan 7: Police chief Abdul Rahim Noor resigns.

1999, Jan 13: Justice Paul allows the prosecution to amend the charges so that they no longer depend on proof that Anwar was also guilty of sexual misconduct.

1999, Jan 14: Justice Paul expunges all evidence to prove or disprove allegations of Anwar's sexual misconduct.

1999, Jan 27: Premier announces the establishment of an independent Royal Commission of Inquiry to investigate the police assault on Anwar.

1999, March 2: Rahim confesses to 'slapping' Anwar while the latter was blindfolded and handcuffed in police custody.

1999, March 16: Anwar seeks to disqualify Justice Paul from overseeing the trial but is rejected by the judge himself.

1999, April 6: A royal inquiry submits report to the King recommending that action be taken against "only one police officer" for causing the injuries.

1999, April 14: Anwar is found guilty and sentenced to six years jail on all four charges of corrupt practices.

1999, April 22: Rahim is charged with attempting to cause grievous bodily harm to Anwar in a lock-up cell in Bukit Aman on Sept 20, 1998, the night Anwar was arrested. He pleads not guilty.

1999, June 7: Anwar and his adopted brother Sukma answer to charges of sodomising Anwar's former driver Azizan Abu Bakar under the Penal Code at the Kuala Lumpur High Court of Arifin Jaka.

1999, Oct 21: Mahathir is issued a subpoena to appear in court on Oct 28 as a witness in Anwar's sodomy trial.

2000, March 15: Rahim sentenced to two months in jail and RM2,000 fine by Sessions Court. He files an appeal with the High Court.

2000, April 21: Judge Arifin rules that Mahathir need not testify in court as he finds no proof of Mahathir's involvement in alleged conspiracy against Anwar.

2000, April 29: Anwar appeals before the Court of Appeal on his corruption verdict. The Court of Appeal president, Justice Lamin Yunus, and justices Ahmad Fairuz Sheikh Abdul Halim and Mokhtar Sidin, affirm the decision by Justice Paul. The panel opts not to read out the grounds of the judgment.

2000, Aug 9: Anwar is convicted of sodomy by the High Court and given a nine-month jail term to be served consecutively at the end of his six-year corruption conviction. No date is fixed for the sodomy appeal.

2001, April 30: Rahim jailed as Court of Appeal panel of justices Shaik Daud Ismail, Mohd Saari Yusoff and KC Vohrah rejects Rahim's appeal on his jail term and reinstates fine set aside by the High Court.

2001, May 12: Prosecutors announce they are withdrawing four outstanding counts of sodomy and one of corruption against Anwar, without giving any reason.

2002, Feb 4: A Federal Court panel headed by Chief Justice Mohamed Dzaiddin Abdullah and consisting of Chief Judge of the High Courts of Sabah and Sarawak Steve Shim Lip Kiong and Federal Court judge Haidar Mohd Noor hears out Anwar's appeal on corruption conviction.

2002, March 25: Anwar's appeal before the Federal Court is postponed due to a bomb scare. An unidentified luggage is found at the side of the Federal Court building. The owner of the bag is arrested under the ISA for interrogation but released the next day.

2002, April 2: Chief Justice Dzaiddin defers judgment on Anwar's appeal to an undisclosed date.

2002, July 8: One of Anwar's lawyers Sankara Nair announces in a press conference that the Federal Court will be delivering its judgment on July 10.

2002, July 10: The Federal Court delivers its judgment on Anwar's appeal.
