National Union of Bank Employees (NUBE) members have endorsed with an overwhelming majority, the national executive council's actions to suspend and expel errant members and branches.

Of the 14,093 members who took part in the balloting over the resolution, 13,212 voted in favour. Only 542 voted against the resolution while 339 were spoilt votes.

NUBE issued 19,831 ballot forms to members in benefit on July 9. On the July 19 deadline to return the forms, 14,093 were received. Counting of votes took place over the weekend.

The resolution on the suspension of several branches, expulsion of branch officials and key national exco members as well as replacement of affected office bearers was adopted at the extraordinary delegates conference held in Penang on July 6.

NUBE president Abdul Jalil Abdul Hamid said despite the confusion and chaos created by the expelled/suspended members, members have given the new leadership a fresh mandate.

"It is evident that members will stand up and reject unscrupulous leaders with personal interests.

"The confusion and chaos created by the suspended/expelled members not only delayed many activities organised for members but also the preparation for a new collective agreement which is very crucial in view of the rapid changes in the banking industry.

"We are confident the members will make the right choices in the coming election of principal office bearers so that they can administer the union without any hindrance," he said in a statement.

Delegates confab next week

The NUBE will be holding its triennial delegates conference next week.

The Kedah, Kuala Lumpur and Seremban branches were suspended last April due to their refusal to comply with NUBE rules. This was followed by the expulsion of officials for unlawfully breaking into the union's sealed premises and removing documents, files, letterheads and cheque books.

Abdul Jalil claimed that the suspended and expelled union officials were operating from another premise to confuse members and disrupt the NUBE's administration.

"We strongly urge these individuals to stop attempting to confuse members and obstruct the leaders from carrying out their functions effectively."

Other resolutions include the appointment of interim committees to assume the duties of the branch committees for the term 2002-2005 and to appoint from among them delegates for the union's triennial conference.

The members also gave Abdul Jalil and his team the mandate to pursue investigations into several cases of financial mismanagement which had caused several million ringgit in losses for NUBE.
