The state assemblyperson for Titi Tinggi Yip Sun Onn has withdrawn his resignation letter, according to Perlis state legislative assembly speaker Yazid Mat.

According to Yazid, Yip stated his intentions to withdraw the letter through a cellphone text message at about 7pm today.

azlan "He has repented from his action (of resigning) and is now prioritising his party and constituents," Yazid told Malaysiakini .

He assured that Barisan Nasional did not entice him to stay put as a state assemblyperson with any kind of offers or promises.

Yesterday, BN chairperson and Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak said Yip would not be resigning and will continue to remain with BN.

"I have obtained confirmation from Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin and Perlis Menteri Besar Mohd Isa Sabu that Yip will continue to support BN and will not resign," he said.

Najib was speaking to reporters in Hong Kong just before leaving for home after attending the Credit Suisse Asian Investment Conference, reports Berita Harian .

Yesterday, Yip, ( left ) who was also state Housing, Local Government and Bandar Baru Perlis Development Committee chairperson, resigned as MCA’s Titi Tinggi rep through a letter addressed to Yazid.

Yip had been dropped from the state executive council last Friday and was replaced by MCA’s Indera Kayangan assemblyperson, Dr Por Choo Chor.

In the 12 th general elections in 2008, Yip defeated PKR’s Keria Senawi and independent Mohammad Radzi Mustaffa by a majority of1,841 votes.

'EC not notified'

NONE Mohd Isa had said that Yip had been dropped in accordance with the agreement reached with MCA whereby its representatives would take turns to sit on the state exco as had been the practise for the past few terms.

Meanwhile, at a press conference this morning to announce that Penang and Selangor could not hold local council elections, Election Commission chairperson Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusuf said as far as the EC was concerned, Yip was still the legitimate state assemblyperson for Titi Tinggi.

He said as long as his resignation was not notified to the EC by the state assembly speaker, Yip was still the lawful representative for the constituency.

azlan "We became aware of the matter through the press. Maybe you know more than us. But officially, until the moment of this press conference, there has been no such notification from the Perlis speaker," he said.

He added that there was no such thing as an ‘automatic vacancy’even if an elected representative sent a letter of resignation directly to the commission.

'Within 10 days'

"When we receive a letter of resignation be it from the representative himself or from the speaker, we will investigate if the resignation really occurred and decide if there is a vacancy within 10 days," he said.

He, however, declined to comment on Ipoh Timur MP Lim Kit Siang’s statement saying that a letter of resignation cannot be retracted.

"It is only our concern when the letter of resignation reaches us," he said.
