azlan The newly formed Human Rights Party (HRP) will not participate in the upcoming Hulu Selangor by-election.

In a statement today, pro-tem secretary-general P Uthayakumar said this was decided by the party central committee yesterday.

"Neither will we endorse anyone who contests in this election. We will remain completely neutral," he said.

He explained that HRP were staying out of the contest as it felt its support was yet not  yet large enough for an outright win.

 

"HRP's participation would therefore only mean delivering an advantage to PR or BN. We do not want to give any advantage to either coalition as they do not deserve it." 

NONE Uthyakumar ( left ) added that HRP did not need to test their strength on the ground or demonstrate their political potential.

"We know our strength from the input from our supporters. We know that we are a rising force in the Malaysian political landscape. We are not in a hurry," he said.

He was responding to speculation that HRP would field a candidate in the by-election, which follows the death of Hulu Selangor MP Dr Zainal Abidin Ahmad last week.

MIC had confirmed that it will recommend deputy president G Palanivel as the BN candidate.

However there is a possibility that Umno will have its candidate in mind.

Pakatan Rakyat is in the process of selecting  its candidate.
