Following the explosive revelation of Malaysia's tie-up with Apco Worldwide, PAS has submitted a memorandum seeking royal intervention in terminating the government’s contract with the international public relations firm.

PAS deputy president Nasharuddin Mat Isa submitted a memorandum, signed by its president Abdul Hadi Awang and all PAS MPs, to an officer to the Keeper of the Rulers Council in Kuala Lumpur today.

NONE “We the PAS MPs sincerely hope for intervention from the rulers to revoke the contract between Apco and the government, for the security of the country and its people,” reads the five-page document.

“This will prevent negative perceptions about Malaysia in the eyes of the world especially among Muslim nations.”

Attached to the memorandum was a copy of the contract between the government and Apco, as well as the full text of Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim's speech in Parliament on the matter.

The document also pointed to the alleged involvement of Jewish leaders including former ambassadors to Germany and US, who are senior advisers to Apco.

Nasharuddin told reporters that the government's action to sign the contract was akin “to inviting in an intruder who will upset the sovereignty of the nation”.

“After the matter was brought up in Parliament and debated, we now bring the matter to the attention of the Rulers Council for further action,” he said.

Ten PAS MPs accompanied Nasharuddin, including vice-presidents Mahfuz Omar and Salahuddin Ayub.

‘Unacceptable to Malaysians’

Mahfuz said the deal shows that Malaysia is associating itself with Apco, which has helped the Israel government in its public relations exercise.

“Israel has violated and encroached into Palestinian territory. How can we sign an agreement with a company that is associated with Israel's atrocities on Palestinians? This is unacceptable to all Malaysians.”

Nasharuddin, who is also Bachok MP, said the government has not provided an acceptable explanation after Anwar’s exposé.

Salahuddin said PAS is bringing this matter to the Rulers Council, as it is the avenue of last resort in a constitutional monarchy.

“We will see what happens,” he said.

On March 30, Anwar had produced two documents in the Dewan Rakyat to back his assertions on the link between Apco Worldwide, the Israeli government and the 1Malaysia slogan.

One document was the agreement signed between Apco and the government, which was witnessed by premier Najib Abdul Razak's press secretary Tengku Sharifuddin Tengku Ahmad.

Another was the deal inked between Apco and the Israeli government when Ehud Barak - who later as premier adopted the One Israel slogan - was the head of the Israeli militia.

The presence of Tengku Sharifuddin, Anwar said, underlies the importance of Apco to the Najib government, because contracts are typically signed by government officers.

However, Anwar is facing potential censure in a move initiated by the government.
