A group representatives from Malay NGOs torched an effigy of Zaid Ibrahim in front of the PKR headquarters today protesting the opposition politician's alleged “treason against the state”.
Leading a 30-strong chanting crowd, Perkasa Youth chief Armand Azhar Abu Hanifah accused Zaid of being a "traitor" over a posting in his blog yesterday.
“If you cannot accept the Sultan as the head of Islam, please leave the state! You are now on Selangor territory, if you cannot respect the Selangor Sultan, we deem you to be traitor to the race!” said Armand.
In the May 5 posting, Zaid argued that Malaysians are no longer living in feudalism and the Selangor sultan's decree banning politics from mosques is merely the ruler's personal views carrying little weight.
The group assembled about 20 metres from the PKR office in Tropicana, Petaling Jaya and took a short march to the building while chanting “ Daulat Tuanku! ”.
The group was seen carrying placards accusing Zaid of being a traitor, an alcoholic, being treasonous andshould be banished from Selangor.
Threats of more protests
The group later read out a statement urging Zaid to apologise to the Sultan within 24 hours, or face further protests, beginning tomorrow at the Shah Alam mosque.
They also demanded that the party take disciplinary action against Zaid or they will assume PKR and Pakatan Rakyat share the same position.
Earlier, a heated argument ensued when the group members verbally sparred with PKR staff members who peered out of their office windows.
Another argument broke out when a woman emerged from the PKR headquarters to rebut the demonstrator’s allegations. Her party colleagues later separated her from the crowd.
Among groups represented at the demonstration today were Perkasa, Majlis Gabungan NGO Pembela Negara (Magaran), Gabungan Graduan Melayu Muda (GGMM) and the Barisan Bertindak Penduduk Seksyen 23 Shah Alam, who gained infamy for the 'cow head demo'.
The demonstration ended with the protesters burning an effigy of Zaid and after handing over their memo to a PKR representative.
