Pak Lah sad over Malay lecturers involvement in KMM
Deputy Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said today that he is saddened and disappointed over the involvement of the few Malay lecturers in terrorist activities like the Kumpulan Mujahidin Malaysia (KMM).
"I'm very sad because they are Malays who have attained progress and success...very highly knowledgeable, some being professors. Why choose this path," he told reporters after opening the Melaka Barisan Nasional (BN) convention at Seri Negeri, Ayer Keroh in Melaka this morning.
He was asked to comment on the arrest in Kota Baru yesterday of a suspect, Wan Min Wan Mat, 42, believed to be the head of the KMM in Johor, under the Internal Security Act (ISA).
Military training
According to Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Norian Mai who announced the arrest, Wan Min, a former lecturer of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) in Skudai, Johor, was believed to have received military training in southern Philippines in 1996 and in Afghanistan in 2000.
Norian also said that Wan Min was one of nine people believed to be the key KMM leaders being sought by the police based on their alleged terrorist activities in the country.
According to national news agency Bernama Abdullah said that after having attained excellence in the various fields and achieved success, these KMM members should have instead made contributions for the progress and development of the country.
