'Wee's action a betrayal of voters'

vox populi small thumbnail 'I travelled 35km to Wangsa Maju to cast my vote for PKR on March 8, 2008. Wee Choo Keong's action is a betrayal of my vote.'

Wee quits PKR, finally

Shanmuganathan: I travelled 35km to Wangsa Maju to cast my vote for PKR on March 8, 2008. Wee Choo Keong's action is a betrayal of my vote. Wee's timing of his announcement before the Sibu by-election is a betrayal of PKR's trust. You can't blame Prime Minister Najib Razak, even if he is behind these manoeuvres.

Lucia: Why can't these frogs understand that people voted for them because they are in PKR. People don't want to see them serving as independent. Just like that Zahrain Hashim from my constituency (Bayan Baru). Now I consider my constituency has no MP.

Justice: Condemning these people who quit is pretty easy. But instead of seeing about 20 MPs joining Pakatan Rakyat during the Sept 16 coup, six have now left.

Many of us voted for the opposition, but we have yet to get an explanation from them when six crossed over. One or two is fine. But six?

This "I expected it", "What is new?" and "Good riddance" from the leadership is not good enough. They have to evaluate, as the Chinese alone will not be able to carry the next general election.

AkuMelayu: Pakatan is a coalition formed with a single objective - that is to win elections. There is no ideological understanding between PAS, DAP and PKR. The difference in ideology between PAS and DAP and PKR is too wide to bridge.

Anwar Ibrahim is the glue which holds the three parties together but now he has a problem. A ship cannot have three captains. Now the Pakatan"tongkang" is already full of holes and I don't think their leaders are able to plug them anymore.

It's sinking faster than the people have expected. If I read right, more are leaving PKR. Good riddance?

Michael Ng: All those who declare themselves independent should have the dignity to resign totally from their seats first and seek re-election under a new party or as an independent. They were elected because of the party they stood on, not because of their personalities or character.

Bloody no shame, all these greedy slim balls.

Anonymous: It's expected and not a surprise at all. Everybody knew all along that he would jump, just as an ungrateful frog would do, it's a matter of when. His reason is flimsy and has no bearing whatsoever on the strength of Pakatan. His political career is as good as gone.

MyKad shocker for Sabahan non-Muslims

Mangodurian: To solve the problem, make it easy to change religion. Have a law that simply says the religion of the latest bona fide religious authority, be it the mosque, church or temple to produce the latest certificate of profession for that person - be considered valid as the latest religion.

The National Registration Department's responsibility is only to check for a religious certification and can change the religion upon seeing that document. Freedom of religion means one can be today a Christian, tomorrow a Muslim and the day after a Hindu. "Islam is the official religion but religious freedom is guaranteed". Contradiction in action.

Anak Malaysia: Genuine mistake or part of a deliberate strategy of Islamisation? If it is a genuine mistake, there should be no reason for delay in rectification. Why drag your feet? Especially when the hardship caused to a non-Muslim family in the event of death is a tremendous injustice and heartbreaking - more body-snatching and property deprivation.

This problem is an old one. The burden of proof is on the NRD to show how they arrive at the conclusion that these people are Muslims, not the other way round. Surely there are better ways than this to win converts.

Are they hoping that by inaction or apathy on the part of the victims to seek redress of this grievance, the future generations will automatically be absorbed to become Muslims? Show us the fairness and justice in Islam, please.

Saengch: That is why 1Malaysia is a dangerous idea. The government is looking to implement 1Religion, 1Culture, inevitably end up messing our free choice in life. It is also a warning for Malaysians not to blindly accept the government's role in managing our private information.

Too few people question why we should let the government know about our religious beliefs, and to have our religious information burned into MyKad. Why should MyKad contain so much personal information?

Luckily we have a hapless government, NRD, MyKad contractors, and big GLC banks such that privacy details that can really threaten our liberty have mostly not been downloaded to MyKad.

Imagine an ISA protester evading police pursuit, having to expose her whereabouts when buying gasoline, going through tolls, and drawing money from ATM. Indeed, government incompetence can be a blessing for individual liberty - more than we realise.

We can start by requesting the NRD to leave our religious info blank on MyKad. And SUPP says a vote for DAP is a vote for PAS and an Islamic state. How ironic when PAS protect the rights of non-Muslims and BN doesn't.

Non-Muslim gets leave in bid to be syariah lawyer in FT

Lesungbatu: Islam is a religion, while being a lawyer is a profession or job you do. Why do we have to constrict ourselves to religious matters when it comes to upholding justice? Wearing or not wearing a tudung not does not differentiate one's ability to discharge justice fairly. Evil can exist in anybody and soul, regardless of whether he/she is a Muslim or not.

Ramachandran Muniandy: In many countries like Nigeria, India, Pakistan, Indonesia, Libya, Turkey and even Syria, anyone can become syariah court lawyer as long as you have the qualifications. One's religion is not important, but the knowledge of syariah laws is important.
