The massive rally to protest the legalisation of the sports betting planned for next Saturday will be turned into a “victory celebration” instead.

The loose coalition calling themselves Gerakan Rakyat Membantah Judi (GMJ) said that they will also scrap the planned march to the Istana Negara to hand over a memorandum calling for cancellation of the licence.

“I have received a lot of calls from people from all around the country, still wanting to rally. So we may turn this into a small celebration,” he said when contacted.

Suhaizan is still not quite convinced its all over, despite Najib’s announcement at the press conference last night after the Umno supreme council meeting.

Government decision or Umno’s?

He said that he has faxed a letter to the Prime Minister’s Office, asking for an explanation on the veracity of Najib’s statements.

NONE “The decision should have been made by the government and the cabinet, and not just Umno,” said Suhaizan.

“Who knows? Maybe Umno decided against it but the cabinet may still push for it and (the sports betting licence) will still win approval.

“We want the decision to be made properly by the government,” he said.

He then said that the GMJ committee will be meeting tomorrow for a decision on their next course of action.

“Although the government has fulfilled our main wish, much more could be done in educating the public on the evils of gambling,” he said.
