The government has taken measures to ensure that the national security is under control and free from any threat from terrorists.

NONE Home Minister Hishammuddin Hussein said terrorist groups had been identified and closely monitored and their members would be nabbed before they could act.

"I don’t think this is something that we have to be really concerned and worried about. It is under control and isolated cases involving terrorists, whether it is Islamic or other forms of militants, I am handling it personally.

"I will make sure that these cases are not at a level that would cause panic because if not, we will take drastic actions," he told reporters after opening the 13th Asia Pacific Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) National Academy Associates Conference in Kuala Lumpur today.

Hishammuddin was asked to comment on terrorist treats in the country following the recent arrests of locals and foreigners linked to Jemaah Islamiah.

"It's happening all over the world, the younger they are, the easier to recruit... we have to monitor everything and everyone when it comes to security and national interest. We are working very closely with our counterparts," he said.

'Men in blue'

On the police's request for exclusive rights to use blue uniform, he said technical aspects to gazette the colour and design of the uniform would be given priority.

NONE "This is to avoid confusion with other agencies (using blue uniform) and ensure that the police's presence will be an important aspect in reducing crimes besides creating a feeling of security among the people.

Eventually, the police will be more respected and recognised," he added.

Hishammuddin said as the approval would not be easy to get, he did not discount that an understanding with other agencies would be reached in the matter.

Deputy Inspector-General of Police Ismail Omar, FBI National Academy president Kim Derry, FBI's International Operations Division assistant director Joseph Demarest and Police College commandant Shahbudin Abd Wahab were present at the conference.
