A Burmese activist who was arrested by police with three other Malaysians for gate-crashing an embassy reception at the Nikko Hotel in Kuala Lumpur on Tuesday, was found to be lacking proper documents and will be handed over to the Immigration Department.

This was revealed by DAP member of parliament for Seputeh Teresa Kok, who had met with the police earlier to discuss the fate of the activist, Peter Hee Man, who is being detained at the Dang Wangi police district headquarters.

"City police CID chief Mat Zain Ibrahim told me that no matter what, Hee Man will be handed over to the Immigration authorities as the documents he possesses are not legitimate," she told malaysiakini .

She reiterated the grave concern for Hee Man's safety if he is sent to a detention camp and subsequently deported back to Myanmar as he will be persecuted by the State Peace and Development Council (SPDC).

Hee Man was among a group of 20 activists who entered the hotel where the Burma embassy's naval and air force attachs were holding a reception to celebrate Armed Forces Day.

Once in, they removed their shirts to reveal T-shirts bearing the picture of Burmese pro-democracy leader, Aung San Suu Kyi.

The police were alerted immediately but 16 protestors managed to evade arrest. The other three Malaysians, including two women, were detained at the Dang Wangi police station for the night.

Meanwhile, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) here has appealed to the Malaysian government not to deport Hee Man before it interviews him to assess his status.

When contacted, UNHCR protection officer Shinji Kubo said that Hee Man's application for refugee status with the office is still pending.

"He was scheduled to come to us for an interview in a few weeks time. However, we will try to meet him before he is handed over to the Immigration authorities." said Kubo..
