KUALA LUMPUR Malaysia has arrested two religious teachers suspected of being members of the al-Qaeda linked Jemaah Islamiyah terrorist network, a report said Sunday.

The two Malaysian nationals were picked up Saturday in Sandakan town in Sabah state on Borneo island, the New Sunday Times reported.

They are being held under the Internal Security Act, which allows for detention without trial, the newspaper said, without giving any further details.

Malaysia has detained more than 70 suspected Islamic militants in the past 18 months.

Many of them are said to be members of JI, blamed for the bomb blast on Bali in neighbouring Indonesia in October that killed nearly 200 people. AFP
