Dont be bitten by the bug of false sentiments: Mahathir

Do not torch the mosquito net out of spite for the insects and this is Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad's advice for civil servants who were influenced by unfounded sentiments.

The premier warned that falling prey to such sentiments as anger and hatred towards the government would be detrimental to them and bring destruction to the country.

"We should not burn the mosquito net out of anger at the mosquitoes," he said at a dinner for federal government officers in Kelantan, last night.

"The mosquito net in this context is our own country, if we destroy the country out of anger at certain things, we will become the victim," he was quoted as saying in a Bernama report.

Mahathir said administrators and the government must forge closer ties in implementing programmes for national development to ensure the country becomes a developed nation by 2020.

Integrity and sincerity

He added the biggest success for the government and its employees would be when Malaysia attains the developed nation status.

The premier is confident the goal could be achieved since civil servants were well trained and willing to implement government policies.

"I believe the success or failure of any administration depends on the integrity and sincerity of officers in discharging their duties," he said.

Mahathir noted that Malaysia had achieved extraordinary success because no other developing nation can equal the development here.

The premier, accompanied by his wife Dr Siti Hasmah Mohamad Ali, is on a two-day working visit to Kelantan.
