Same old, same old with new IGP

your say 'For those who had hoped that the change in IGP would bring about a change in the modus operandi of the police force, you will be disappointed.'

One-day remand for Zunar, freed at 6pm

Anonymous: If I was the police officer who took Zunar for a ride, arrested him overnight without taking any statement and remanded him the next day just because of 'arahan dari atasan' (orders from above), I'd rather quit my job simply because my conscience tells me the whole thing is so much against justice that even my family couldn't take pride of my action.

I expected the police force under new IGP (inspector-general of police) Ismail Omar to have given us a breath of fresh air after taking over from Musa Hassan, but I was wrong.

Adcin: What a sad day when politicians cannot take a joke and laugh at themselves. Maybe the joke is too close to reality. It looks like business as usual for our new IGP. Why did they keep Zunar locked up (read: remanded) for this offence?

David Yee: I had no idea that being a cartoonist is a crime in Malaysia. Making fun of public figures seems to have the police working overtime. I enjoy Zunar's comical expressions and I do not find it to be seditious at all.

BN, please do not run around the bush and get straight to the point, tell the rakyat what's so seditious about his cartoons? Every flip-flop is an embarrassment and an insult to Malaysians. If Zunar is truly a national threat, charge him in the highest court of the country... otherwise leave him alone.

Lover Boy: I have been enjoying Zunar's cartoons in Malaysiakini for a long time, not thinking about the cartoonist himself. Now with his arrest, I am sure many Malaysians have sat up and taken notice of this issue.

Let's help Zunar in the easiest way we can - buy a copy of his Cartoon-o-phobia . I am buying four of copies of the book to give it away as Deepavali, Christmas or birthday present. Let's help him to make it a bestseller.

Bapak Toyol: Umno cowards are using the police and the judiciary to harass people. If I were the IGP and the chief justice, I would rather resign than be used by Umno. If this is not an abuse (of power), what is?

LI Ting Rui: The whole government machinery is so sick that it is beyond redemption. Whatever hope they spew is just to hoodwink the uninformed. If you don't already see that Malaysia is drowning, then enjoy being a victim.

Unfortunately, we are being victimised as well. What bad karma we have being associated with these uninformed (stupid) voters.

SayaAnakBangsaMalaysia: How is the behaviour pattern shown by the police in this case any different from the behaviour of petty street thugs sent by a local mafia boss to intimidate and break up the shop of a shop owner who refuses to pay protection money?

The police had no cause to arrest Zunar , but came in a large gang - sent by their Umno bosses - to seize his books and arrested him without charges. Then they railroaded his remand hearing without allowing him proper legal representation and are now trying to intimidate his associates at Malaysiakini as well.

As lawyer Latheefa Koya said, this is all done in complete bad faith. It is clear that the sole purpose of this nasty exercise is to 'punish' and attempt to intimidate Zunar - whose satirical cartoons regularly shine a harsh light on the corruption, abuses of power and hypocracies of the Umno-BN regime.

Robert L: For those who had hoped that the change in IGP would bring about a change in the modus operandi of the police, you will be disappointed (as usual). It's business as before - continual harassment and intimidation.

Not funny: If PM Najib Razak and the rest of the goons, including the AG (attorney-general), the IGP and the judiciary had been listening to US President Barack Obama's speech at the UN two days ago, there was no mention of Malaysia as a beacon of democracy and freedom in this part of our world. Very soon, Malaysia would be ranked lower than Zimbabwe when it comes to human rights.

My heart goes out to Zunar and his family but the day of reckoning is around the corner. And what we will do to these guys will not be funny.

Cops search Malaysiakini, leave empty-handed

Rayfire: Please repeat after me: cartoons and candles are not weapons. Please repeat this 1,000 times or more until it goes deep into your hardened skulls and seeps into your brain well.

Please look for people who carry the following: C4, guns, parangs, BN or Umno logos, Perkasa banners or drugs. Now these are weapons. Some are really lethal.

Ferdtan: For Najib to advise Obama on Islamophobia , can he first overcome his 'cartoon-o-phobia'?

StevenForMalaysia: Najib to advise Obama on Islamophobia? Clean up your own home first. Orang bagi muka sahaja, jangan ingat kita pandai; kita cuma jaguh kampong, lah .

Steve Oh: I was watching a documentary on how Hitler's Nazis persecuted his political opponents. How strikingly similar. Zunar's arrest and the police visit to Malaysiakini's office are part and parcel of the systemmatic harassment of Malaysians who are merely exercising their fundamental freedom of expression. There is nothing criminal in cartoons that are political. The police should leave Zunar alone and earn their salaries going after the real criminals.

Malayamuda: I don't understand the police. The little girl, Sharlinie (Mohd Nashar), they haven't found, but they are looking for cartoon books.
