'Halal, haram': Umno not fit to decide

Senior citizens return 'haram' RM100 cash awards

GH Kok: Penang Umno state opposition leader Azhar Ibrahim's story is so unbelievable that I cannot imagine how he can come up with it. This is sandiwara at its peak - totally unbelievable. Please double check the people who purportedly ‘returned the money'.

One Malaysian: Umno, please stop talking about halal and haram as you guys are not fit to speak about them. If you are all true God-fearing Muslims, then come out and openly admit that the BN government in Perak is haram as the three 'frogs' allegedly accepted bribes and betrayed the trust of the voters.

In Penang, most Malaysians believe that the money given out is halal as the Penang Pakatan Rakyat government has proven to us that they are wiping out corruption.

Anonymous: Azhar Ibrahim and his team should return all the monies they have received from the government since the monies they have received may have also come from dubious sources since the Treasury received monies from pork sellers, from gaming companies, beer sellers and many other businesses that are not halal.

Amir Efendy: I think all these 40 senior citizens were given RM150 by Umno in order to return the RM100 to the Penang government. Based on the photo I saw in Berita Harian , it seems that the event was being stage managed for the press.

YF: Why only so few Malays returning the RM100? I though Umno represented the majority of the Malays? So it looks like Pakatan has made Umno a minority party as more Malays are now supporting Pakatan.

Good job Azhar, you made a mess of Umno with your haram trick. The Malays today are fed up of with the rasuah and haram antics of Umno.

A Kamal: I think there is a theory traced to the Hanafi school where once the state confiscates an ‘X' amount of money, amount ‘X' becomes halal by act of state. Once gambling money is received by state as taxes, etc, it becomes halal for redistribution.

I'll step down in January: Samy Vellu

Chipmunk: Looking at the trend, S Samy Vellu finally got the hint that he is no longer relevant to the Indian community in Malaysia. I am very sure he will only quit after attending the Ninth Indian Diaspora Conference in New Delhi because if he leaves before that, he will have to pay for his own ticket and people in India will look down on him.

The other thing is that since MIC has become a liability to Umno, they (MIC) have no choice but to change their leadership. But my guess may be that Samy will also be like Dr Mahathir Mohamad and run the show from behind. G Palanivel is just going to be a stooge and puppet, and he will just follow orders because he has no backbone. Just wait and see.

Alwin Yew: I remember during one of the by-elections the last time (I think Lunas), Samy openly said he will not return to Kuala Lumpur if BN lost. Well, BN promptly lost and the next day guess who was back in KL?

Bapak Toyol: Umno must have given him an ultimatum - either you step down now or we get the MACC to hound you.

Anonymous: The sooner the better but what's the big deal? This guy did nothing for the Indians and you think another Indian leader can do what is good and right for the Indians? MIC should close shop and it is best to reject racial politics. So Samy and MIC must go.

Glimmerati: Does anyone care any more? Can we have non-race based political parties with ideas of reforming the country to benefit all Malaysians progressively, step up please?

Mahindar Singh: This is bad news for Pakatan. Samy's liability to BN was the ace they had up their sleeve.

Gandhi: MIC is sick because of one infective agent and that is Samy. The very minute he disappears, MIC might recover. But the irreversible damage done to MIC cannot be undone. Deep in his conscience, he knows that he created this predicament and his legacy is a shameful one.

Why is he waiting till January as though his service is indispensable? For all his luxurious living, he must taste the poor Indians' lifestyle and hear all the curses from the victims of his bluffs. He should revisit his poor background.

Bozuka: The government should declare a public holiday on his retirement. Adios , Samy Vellu.

Idris: No gov't involvement in Allah-Yahweh swap

Sabawak: Allah was there before Islam. Allah was there when there were Christians in this world and that was before Islam and Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) and Christians used the word ‘Allah' since then. So let's not dispute it, it will only ruffle the feathers of narrow-minded religous bigots.

Allah is God for goodness sake, so let Allah be Allah. Allah was the creator of the universe and us human beings, so Allah is everybody's God.

Simon Lee: It is not the Catholic Church or the archbishop who is demanding the right to use the word ‘Allah'. It's pure common sense the word ‘Allah' cannot be trademarked like Coca Cola. The world's Christians/Catholics, Hindus, Sikhs and all good Muslims are demanding this basic right for anyone to use the word ‘Allah'.

It is alarming that bigots can think they can just trademark the word ‘Allah' and pass a ‘law', threatening and forbidding anyone using the term. Let it be very clear - nothing in this world or no man-made laws can stop Christians or anyone else from praying using the word ‘Allah', Jesus Christ, Buddha or Prophet Mohammad, whether publicly or otherwise.

Ferd Tan: It seems that Idris Jala wants his church to capitulate in the fight for the right to use the word 'Allah'. It's a sinister way to use him and he letting himself be used by his BN government to do the dirty work of convincing his fellow Christians to give up the fight for the right.

Is this part of his KPI set by his boss for a big bonus? Idris Jala, there is such thing as 'conscience first, KPI second'.

Focus: The 'Allah' issue is a non-religious one. If it is a matter of religious concern, why is it then, for example, that Arab Muslims do not find it a bother when the term is used by Christians there? I suspect it is more of a race issue; if it a religious arguement then it is a far, secondary one.

Muslims elsewhere in the world are not disturbed over the term used because they know very well whom and what they believe in. Nothing doing that they love Allah less than the Malaysian Malay-Muslims. Oh, such confident people unlike some of our Malaysian Malay-Muslims friends.

Karpal: Listen to Branson, stop Sodomy II trial

Kgen: Umno is blind to the fact that Anwar Ibrahim's conviction will have far more deleterious political impact on them than any illusory political gain. The case has been torn to shreds and court proceedings are so biased that it is a shameless kangaroo court for all to see.

There is nothing the prosecution can do to remove the public's impression that this is but a malicious political persecution. Umno pushing the trial through is the crude behaviour of the arrogant where might makes right. If Anwar is jailed, it will unleash a wave of sympathy which will sweep them (BN) out of power.

Swipenter: Besides Sodomy II, there are a few things that are just as damaging to our country like racism and discrimination, the poor image of our judiciary, corruption and the disturbing crime rate. The Umno-led government doesn't seem to realise that in this day of instant information, nothing can be hidden for long.

Steve Oh: The Sodomy II charge should be dropped not because Richard Branson says so for commercial reasons but because Malaysians and others think it is a travesty of justice.

Branson - like the former US government leaders and other foreign leaders - have also voiced their concerns and the fact foreign diplomats observe the court proceedings indicates their ongoing concern. Sodomy I was exposed as a fraud, and its sequel Sodomy II is seen in the same light.

Anonymous: Richard Branson is a great risk-taker; and he has many companies under his Virgin Group. He did not mince his words at the conference. ‘Remove the thorns' and recover your image in the world. You do not need Apco to boost your image.
