A father and son and a newspaper photographer were attacked during the counting of the Sabak Bernam PKR division election last night.

At first the group went after division deputy chief Abu Talib Bujang, 56, who was in the Tun Razak Hall but he managed to evade the attack in the 8.15pm incident.

However, his son, Mohd Fadli, 24, who went to his aid was hit on the head with a chair and had to be taken to the Tengku Ampuan Jemaah Hospital with an ambulance.

Abu Talib's wife, Siti Zubaidah Husni, 49, who is also the PKR division Wanita secretary, told reporters that she witnessed the attack.

Meanwhile, Kosmo photographer Mohd Shaharani Saibi, 28, said he was chased by five people who wanted to grab his camera for recording the incident.

The flash gun of the camera was broken during a scuffle with the group, he told reporters at the scene and later lodged a police report.

According to PKR sources, the counting was called off and the incident would be reported to party secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution.

Some chairs were strewn in the hall after the delegates left under the watchful eyes of three policemen.

Commotion in Kelana Jaya

In Kelana Jaya, Bernama reported that an incident at the PKR division's AGM there taking place at the Subang Jaya Municipal Council Hall yesterday resulted in a report being lodged at the Subang Jaya police station.

The police were said to have intervened when a commotion broke out during the election procedure.

Malaysiakini reported yesterday , however, citing sources present at the time that the police were not at hand as election coordinators and Rela members who were on duty had to control the commotion.

The divisional election which started at 10am saw state PKR leadership council deputy chair Syed Shahir Syed Mohamud defending his post as Kelana Jaya division chief.

He was challenged by Abdul Razak Mohamed Jalil, while Seri Setia assemblyperson Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad contested for deputy division chief. Nik Nazmi faced off agianst S Vigneswaran.

The election process proceeded smoothly until about 12.15pm when an argument broke out between supporters of several candidates.

Election coordinators put a swift end to it and restored order.

Divisional vice-president candidate Kashvinder Singh was seen helping to calm matters down.

Rela officers who were stationed at the hall for crowd control also helped to control the situation.

Another commotion broke out again at 2.15pm, also between supporters of the various candidates, but was again brought under control by election coordinators.

Kelana Jaya parliamentarian Low Gwo-Burne was also seen at the location.

Until about 2.30pm about 40 percent of the 5,900 divisional members turned up to vote.

'Trojan Horse' rampage

More commotion broke out later in the evening during the counting process, this time by supporters of the losing divisional chief candidate.

Sources close to the division said that at around 8pm a group of Abdul Razak’s supporters, some clad in T-shirts bearing the words “I am a Trojan Horse” started to a premature celebration after Abdul Razak gained about 400 votes.

When it was announced that Syed Shahir had won with a slim majority of 2, Abdul Razak’s supporters demanded a recount.

The recount saw Syed Shahir garnering even more votes, with 422 against Abdul Razak’s 416.

Later some of the supporters wearing the ‘Trojan Horse’ T-shirt, allegedly drunk, became unruly when they were denied entry into the main hall where the AGM was to convene to decide on nominations for the central leadership.

Rela and election personnel on duty again managed to get the situation under control.
