ISA report called a 'giant backward leap for human rights'

The Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam) "missed the point" of its latest inquiry pertaining to the Internal Security Act by overlooking the violation of human rights under detention without trial, said human rights group Suara Rakyat Malaysia (Suaram) today.

Suaram condemned "in the strongest possible terms the approach, findings and recommendations of the report as misguided and erroneous" as it focused on "improvements" in detention conditions.

The group said the inquiry report would only be used by the government to further justify the continued use of the ISA which allows for indefinite detention without trial.
