The allegations of corruption against Sarawak Chief Minister Abdul Taib Mahmud by a Malaysia-style WikiLeaks website continues unabated with yet another revelation of a shady land deal.

Whistleblower website Sarawak Report has earlier this week posted yet another alleged land grab by Taib and his family, this time in the outskirts of the state capital, Kuching.

The deal involved a huge swath of state land about 13km from Kuching, and is located next to the Semengok National Park.

The 700 acres of land - about the size of 350 football fields - was once part of the Rajah Brooke Memorial Hospital and was originally bestowed to the public by the Rajah Brooke family for the well-being of sick patients.

According to Sarawak Report , this piece of prime land was "alienated" from the hospital in 1984 by state agency Land Custody and Development Authority (Pelita), which Taib serves as chairman by virtue of his chief minister's post.

azlan Three years later, LCDA transferred the land to Lanco Plantations and the plot was earmarked for oil palm, but it could make way instead for the more profitable housing projects given its proximity to Kuching.

Sarawak Report lamented that the Semengok National Park, which the plot of land is part of, is the "last remaining sanctuary for the orang utan in the entire region".

"The biggest single shareholder in Lanco Plantations is the company Mesti Bersatu Sdn Bhd, which is owned by Taib Mahmud himself and members of his brother Arip's family," said the website.

In addition, it is alleged that the transfer of ownership of the land into private hands was done without any record of money being paid.

Moreover, the details of this "shameful transaction" are stamped ‘confidential' in the Land Registry, said Sarawak Report .

"The profits that have accrued to the Taibs as a result of this secret transfer of land are only too evident," said the website.

"Research has shown that land in this area is now valued at up to RM50,000 per acre, meaning that the 700 acres now in their possession are currently worth at least RM35 million."

Deafening silence from MACC

Sarawak Report has over the past few months revealed a slew of land and properties owned by the Taib family both in Sarawak and overseas.

The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Agency (MACC) has so far kept a deafening silence on the series of exposes relating to Taib's wealth.

"It is surely for the anti-corruption commissioners at the MACC to enquire on what grounds Taib, as both the chairman of the LCDA and chief minister, gifted such a property to his family?"

Taib, who has ruled Sarawak since 1981, is speculated to be among Malaysia's richest , with business interests in a variety of industries locally and abroad.

Most prominent of the Taib family companies is conglomerate Cahaya Mata Sarawak Bhd, which constructed much of the state's infrastructure.
