Blind and deaf to Taib's alleged corruption

'MACC should stop its advertisements in the local media to promote itself as the guardian of anti-corruption. It should instead do its job without fear or favour as mandated by the public.'

More land grab by Taib, claims M'sia's WikiLeaks

Ghkok: The allegations in Sarawak Report must now be reaching billions of ringgit. The evidence is pouring out like water gushing from a huge dam.

So far, there is still no denial whatsoever from Sarawak Chief Minister Abdul Taib Mahmud or his cohorts. There are no evidence presented to prove the allegations wrong.

The entire political system in Sarawak is called into question, as well as 53 years of one-party rule in our country that allow this plundering to breed and fester without a single report in any of our major newspapers, countless radio stations, multiple TV stations and one satellite cable station - none of them spoke, all of them remained silent to this plundering of the state of Sarawak.

We, the voters of this country, are the worst accomplice to this crime - for we kept the same party in power for five decades.

Swipenter: Keep them coming, and we shall see whether the Umno-led government and the MACC (Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission) can ignore such abuses of power and corruption indefinitely.

Sarawakians must be made aware of such things right at their doorsteps. I believe that if the Umno-led government and MACC do nothing, the people of Sarawak would revolt and vote against them (BN), but it is essential to keep highlighting such abuses continuously to remind Sarawakians that they are being robbed left, right and centre by the Taib family and their cronies with the connivance of the peninsular Umnoputras who treat them as ‘fixed deposit' vote banks to hold onto political power.

Louis: Why is MACC still so quiet? Waiting for green lights from the authorities before taking action?

Anonymous: Surely PM Najib Razak cannot remain silent anymore over the many recent reports revealed by Sarawak Report .

We demand that MACC chief Abu Kassim Mohamed take out action immediately to investigate these allegations, failing which he should honour his earlier pledge to resign if he is not seen to take action on such allegations.

Tired: Calls have been made for the authorities to arrest and charge Taib Mahmud with corruption and a slew of other offences. But will such an action pacify and satisfy the detractors and cynics?

The answer is definitely ‘no' because these people will then say the charges are all a show, a wayang , an election gimmick, that he will not be found guilty, etc, just like the Dr Mohd Khir Toyo case.

This is because in their minds, anyone who they say is guilty will be forever be condemned as guilty, no matter what happens. Sigh...

Lexicon: Let's see MACC charges Taib Mahmud and put him behind bars first before we accuse his detractors of complaining. I for one won't complain if he is imprisoned. For that matter, let's see Khir Toyo get charged for more than just buying land cheaply, then we will stop complaining.

Lesungbatu: If anyone travels around Sarawak, one can notice the big contrast between the ‘richest' and the ‘poorest'.

Take Miri for example. If one drives along Luak Bay, you will find big huge mansions erected along the beach front overlooking South China Sea. Rightfully, the beach front is for public use and not given to individuals to build their mansions. Then, not far from there, you'll find the poor along the riverbank in their wooden shacks.

Sarawak is the biggest state in Malaysia, bigger than the peninsular alone. It has oil and gas, and timber is abundant along with many other things, but why is it that we can still find wide disparity amongst its people. Why can't the government provide cheap housing for its citizens?

Gunner: Former Sabah chief minister Pairin Kitingan was once charged in court and found guilty because he signed a contract worth RM2.5 million given to one of his relatives in his home town. Then BPR (Anti-Corruption Agency), now MACC, was very fast and efficient to investigate the case.

But how come MACC is keeping quiet when it comes to Taib Mahmud??

Sarawakian: This ‘Thief Minister of Sarawak' continues with his plundering of state assets. And one cannot imagine how many skeletons he has in his cupboard. We are talking about landed properties only. How about cash transactions over the years? Timber licences alone must be worth billions. As for MACC, don't hold your breath.

ABIL: MACC should stop its advertisements in the local media to promote itself as the guardian of anti-corruption. It should instead do its job without fear or favour as mandated by the public. In any society, there will be corruption and it is the onus of the MACC to go after every case, whether it involves small or big fish.

Bernice Kong: I'm too fed-up reading such news, day-in day-out without any end. No eyes to see nor ears to listen.

Unbelievable, unforgivable and unforgettable

Faz: Taib Mahmud's political secretary Abdul Karim Hamzah is the product of years of indoctrination by Umno-BN. You will find many ‘Abdul Karims' now manning/heading government departments and running government-linked companies where they were trained to believe that their actions or that of their leaders are not wrong but necessary to safeguard the bumiputera stake in the country.

They are promoted not for their ability to work but for their ability to please Umno-BN. I am not at all surprised by the answers given in the Abdul Karim interview as the patronage system is too deeply rooted and all these ‘Abdul Karims' will avoid rocking the boat.

Time has perfected the system for them and nothing will change, apart from changing the government of the day and removing the tainted politicians and administrators.

Loh Lean Cheng: More than 20 years ago, not even a single professor in the economic faculty of our universities dare to utter the suffering of the low- and middle-income groups when they have to pay an exorbitant price - equivalent to 30 years of their savings - to subsidise our national car industry in the name of national pride.

Any decent economic professor would know that Malaysia can never achieve developed status as long as the indirect siphoning of wealth from the low- and middle-income groups continue unabated for the next 20 years.

Sad: Legalised thievery in Bolehland is permissible if it is carried out by Umno and BN. Where is the toothless MACC or have it been told to ‘close one eye' if Umno and BN thieves are involved? The MACC chief should resign and so should the attorney-general. Both are incompetent.
