8.15am: PAS candidate Normala Sudirman visits hawkers and residents at Labis market.

She gives Chinese New Year cards to Chinese voters and greets them, " Xin nian kuai le " (Happy New Year) in Mandarin.

9.00am: Umno candidate Mohd Azahar Ibrahim visits Pasar Labis. He plans to visit three Felda settlements in Chemplak, Chemplak 2 and Chemplak Barat. A prayer session is planned at Masjid Jamed Labis.

He carries a Chinese little girl to pose for photos, but the girl gets frightened and nearly cries.

Azahar brushes off rumours as "slander" that some local Umno leaders are boycotting his campaign because they are disgruntled with his surprise candidacy.

"Many of them support me. You can see they are here," said the former assistant district office flanked by some 20 BN campaigners, including MCA president Chua Soi Lek and Labis MP Chua Tee Yong.

11.05am: PAS candidate Normala appears at the launching of the DAP's Tenang by-election campaign. Her gloves, which she initially wore at the start of the day, have come off.

With their campaign theme ‘Change’, DAP tasked with attracting the Chinese vote is making most of the Chinese New Year mood and the tradition to 'spring clean the house’ before the start of any new year.

They then distributed leaflets resembling Chinese New Year couplets, with the word ‘Change’ written in Chinese. A picture of Normala in a cheongsam graces the back of the leaflet.

11.30am: At a press conference, Normala says BN component parties fail to understand Muslim manners with regards to the shaking of hands.

PAS vice-president Salahuddin Ayub says PAS will reveal a few things regarding the BN candidate, but which do not relate to his personal life.

Decked in their Sunday best and caked in their mothers' cosmetics, the children brought the festivities to the town by belting out Chinese New Year tunes.

Organised by several BN-backed local NGOs, it is understood that everyone will still get a trophy for participation.

4.30pm: A mysterious '1Malaysia' NGO has organised around 60 local villagers to distribute goodies at a new village in Labis.

The 'NGO' has asked the villagers to distribute the gifts to every house in the new village.

The 1Malaysia group had previously appeared at the Galas by-election in Kelantan - claiming to be non-partisan and not campaigning - where they organised a series of dinners, 'marches', and handed out goodies and prizes.

9pm: Azahar meets BN election workers at Bilik Gerakan BN Tenang Station, Lembah Bakti and Tmn Sepakat.

9.34pm: To end the day of songs, BN candidate Azahar went on stage at a Chinese NGO-organised dinner to sing.

"I'm going to song (sic) a little bit. Just a little bit," he said after Johor MB Abdul Ghani Othman's introduction.

Mohd Azahar then sang a Chinese New Year tune 'Gong Xi Gong Xi' to rousing applause from the 800 diners.
