BN woos teachers with RM18.4 million bounty

FREE DAY 3 What's happening in the by-election campaign s in the state constituencies of Kerdau and Merlimau? Quotable quotes, planned events and unplanned incidents as they take place.


6am: Kerdau - PAS candidate Hassanuddin Salim performs his dawn prayers and spends some time with residents of Rumpun Makmur.

9.30am Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin gives out RM18.4 million in 'Anugerah Tawaran Baru' (New Deal Rewards) to  headmasters and principals of 586 primary schools which showed a big leap in their performance and hit NKRA targets in 2010.

Each school receives RM7500. Muhyiddin in his speech admits that this is part of his campaign to woo the votes of teachers.

"In fact I shouldn't have to campaign with teachers, looking at the faces (I know) they are 100 percent BN supporters."

He also reminds the teachers that's the government always building (education) facilities.

The ceremony is organised at SM Tun Syed Zahiruddin, Air Tawar, near Merlimau.

10am: Kerdau - PAS candidate Hassanuddin Salim starts a full day of visits to the three Felda settlements in Kerdau. Apart from meeting with voters, he will also perform his Zuhur and Asar prayers with them.

NONE 10.15 : Another apparently anti-Pakatan leaflet has emerged, this time targeted to Malay voters, claiming that Malays may lose power under Pakatan.

Shown to reporters at the PAS press conference, the leaflet features a news clipping with the headline "Melayu hilang kuasa" (Malays to lose power) and a photo of PKR de-facto leader Anwar Ibrahim, with the caption "Anak cucu bagaimana?" (What will happen to your children and grandchildren?)

11am: Kerdau - PAS daily press conference.

11.30am: Kerdau - PAS election director for Kerdau, Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man, says the the need for physical infrastructure and development is more crucial.

"The needs of the people of Kerdau are not religious, they require a professional," he said at their daily press conference today, referring to their candidate Hassanuddin Salim.

Hassanuddin is a quantity surveyor by trade, while BN's Syed Ibrahim Syed Ahmad is a religious graduate from the Al-Azhar University.

12 noon : Merlimau - DAP to lodge police report on lewd leaflets depicting Pakatan Rakyat leaders in incriminating positions.

NONE 12.15 pm : Merlimau - P Kalamanathan, who won the Hulu Selangor by-election for BN last year and Tenang by-election winner, BN's Mohd Azahar Ibrahim, are spotted alongside DPM Muhyiddin Yassin at an award ceremony in SM Dang Anum.

Malacca Chief Minister Mohd Ali Rustam is in a jovial mood, saying that BN candidate Roslan Ahmad is known locally as Ron, but not RON95 or RON97, but 'Ron 2011'.

He goes on to jest that PAS says BN stands for 'Barang Naik' but it is not as if the dowry for a PAS virgin (anak dara) is RM2000 and not RM10,000 like everyone else.

"Kalau RM2000 saya pun nak tambah satu lagi anak dara PAS, tapi orang rumah kena setuju lah (If it's RM2000 then I want to marry a PAS virgin, but my wife must agree first)," he says to laughter from the audience of teachers, 15-year-old students and their parents.

2pm: Kerdau - Deputy Health Minister Rosnah Abdul Rashid Shirlin will go on a working visit to Kerdau town, presenting food baskets to locals at Dewan MCA.

At the same time, Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob will launch a programme to "modernise" the Rumpun Makmur cooperative's sundry shop at the Rumpun Makmur Felcra cooperative.

3pm: Merlimau - Muhyiddin and Roslan to attend a handing over ceremony of low cost homes in Kampung Chinchin.

3.30pm: Kerdau - Health Minister Liow Tiong Lai will launch a health carnival at SJK(C) Kerdau, and later at 5pm, will go on a house to house visit in Kg Kerdau Baru, where most of the constituency's 400 plus Chinese voters live.

5pm: Merlimau - Biro Tatanegara (BTN) to hold a ceramah at Merlimau Point.

5.30pm: Kerdau - Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob will visit the pasar malam at Desa Murni.

5.30pm: Kerdau - PAS candidate Hassanuddin Salim will go on a walkabout at the Desa Murni pasar malam and meet with youths, accompanied by comedian Bob Lokman.

7pm: Merlimau - 1Malaysia NGO dinner.

tenang by election 23011 1malaysia group lorries 8pm: Merlimau - With valuable lucky draws, free food and entertainment, the mysterious One Malaysia NGOs' dinner at SRJK(C) Merlimau attracted 1,300 people who fill up the school hall.

The person in-charge, Aloysius Lim, who has palyed an active role in organising these by-election One Malaysia dinners, appears at this dinner as well.

As usual, Lim refuses to speak to members of the media. When reporters triy to take his picture, he uses walkie-talkie and hand to cover his face.

8.16pm : Merlimau - A ceramah at a Masjid Al-Syuja'ah in Merlimau Utara is broadcast to the public via loudspeaker.

The speaker says the economy is not controlled by the Malays, unlike in America where it is controlled by the Jews because that is a Jewish country.

In Malaysia, the Malays control politics and we have to support those who try to defend Malay martabat .

The speaker also slammed Muslims who call other Muslims kafir (non-Muslim).

Earlier today, deputy premier Muhyiddin Yassin said PAS likes to produce 'deviant ( songsang ) fatwa', such as saying that those who support Umno are kafir

8.45pm: Kerdau - AS candidate Hassanuddin Salim performs his Isyak prayers in Lipat Kajang.

9pm: Merlimau - Tenang by-election PAS candidate Normala Sudirman to speak at Merlimau Pasir.

9.30pm: Kerdau - PAS candidate Hassanuddin Salim will speak at a ceramah at Kuala Tekal, and later at 11am attend another ceramah at Purun.

11pm : Merlimau - Former Negri Sembilan MB Abdul Isa Samad attracts the crowd in Permatang Serai, a polling district with an overwhelming Malay majority of 82.6 percent.

Most in the audience are middle-aged and are hanging on to his every word as he paints PAS leaders as "incompetent liars".

11.15pm : Merlimau: Many people are spotted either loading hampers in their cars or riding their motorcycles while hanging on to the hampers which they received at the numerous NGO-hosted events across town.
