Last-minute anti-PAS leaflets flood Merlimau

FREE FINAL DAY What's happening in the by-election campaigns in the state constituencies of Kerdau and Merlimau? Quotable quotes, planned events and unplanned incidents as they take place.

 


6am Kerdau: PAS candidate Hassanuddin Salim performs his dawn prayers in Kuala Tekal. He later spends nearly two hours visiting voters in Bukit Lada.

8am Merlimau: Chief Minister Mohd Ali Rustam holds jogging programme a  in Pengkalan Samak.

9am Merlimau: Walkabout by Sabah Chief Minister Musa Aman in Merlimau Pasir.

9.30am Kerdau: Persatuan Anak Felda Kebangsaan (Anak) plans a peaceful protest in front of the management office of Felda Jengka 22, where they were to present a memorandum against BN's alleged abuse of Felda facilities for campaign purposes.

The protest has reportedly been cancelled.

Hassanuddin meanwhile joins the wife of PAS advisor Nik Aziz Nik Mat on a visit to Pekan Sari, Kerdau to meet voters.

Rural and Regional Development Minister Mohd Shafie Apdal attends thalil prayers and a gotong-royong in Kg Seri Ketumbit.

9.30am Merlimau: CM Mohd Ali to launch the Former People's Representative Council’s (Mubarak) Malacca chapter annual general meeting in Merlimau Pasir.

10am Kerdau: Information, Communication and Culture Minister Rais Yatim officiates the opening of a postal booth at Kerdau town. He will later launch a kampung WiFi programme at Kg Rumpun Makmur.

10am Merlimau: Mohd Ali to hand Egypt flight tickets to Malacca  students who were evacuated during the recent uprising.

11.30am Kerdau: Mohd Shafie Apdal launches a 'Program Menyusur Akar' at Kg Gunung Senyum. He will later go to Kg Batu Sawar at 2.30pm to officially open a weighing centre and store.

12.30pm Kerdau: Hassanuddin attends a wedding reception in Kg Ketam, before moving on to Kg Badok to perform his Zohor prayers.

He then goes on a non-stop tour of the constituency, visiting 10 locations from 2pm till the campaign cut-off time at midnight. Among his campaign stops include Telok Sentang, Machang Manis, Kerai, Pulau Pasir Mandi, Batu Sawar, Gunong Senyum, Felda Jengka 22, 23 and 25 before ending his tour at Rumpun Makmur at 11pm.

1.00pm Merlimau: Muhyiddin, who earlier arrives by helicopter, tells his audience  that the opposition is trying to "provoke" Malaysians into revolting against the government, saying that everyone knew that "the country is peaceful, race relations are good and we are developing even further".

2.30pm Merlimau: Muhyiddin attends a meet-the-rakyat event in Ayer Merbau.

3pm Kerdau: Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin visits Kerdau town.

3pm Merlimau: Human Resources Minister S Subramaniam launches a workers' quarters at Merlimau Utara.

anti PAS leaflets merlimau 3.04pm Merlimau: More and more anti-PAS leaflets hit the streets with under 12 hours of the Merlimau by-election campaign period left.

Some are distributed to homes while others, including one that claims that PAS leaders own riches and in fact live lifestyles of 'Mat Salleh' (white people, Westerners) despite their show of piety with their white scull caps, were distributed by BN machinery at an event graced by Muhyiddin.

anti PAS leaflets merlimau One flyer depicted PAS spiritual leader Nik Aziz Nik Mat with a forked tongue, asking if he is an ulama (religious scholar, as Nik Aziz is popularly known) or an ' ularmak ' (a pun on the Malay word for 'snake').

3.15pm Merlimau: A man complains that his wife recently received a phone call where an automated voice recording asked about the recipient’s vote.

"To vote PAS, press 1; To vote BN, press 2; If you unsure, press 3," he says, mimicking the computer voice.

"Through a chat with our Merlimau friends, I found out that those who answer ‘PAS’ or ‘unsure’ (in the telephone poll), will receive an influx of leaflets."

3.20pm Merlimau: EC chief Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof visits the media centre at Merlimau Utara, and seems particularly interested in the software system the local media is using.

3.43pm Merlimau: A BN banner in town that reads ‘ Jom selamatkan Malaysia, undilah kebenaran dan bukannya harapan dan pembohongan ’ (Let's save Malaysia, vote for truth and not hopes and lies) appears to have been vandalised, with its BN logo cut out.

4pm Kerdau: Tourism Minister Ng Yen Yen visits the homestay programme at Felda Jengka 25.

Orang Asli Development Department director-general Sani Mistam will present school bags to Orang Asli students at the Orang Asli settlement in Paya Sendayan.

4.15pm Merlimau: Muhyiddin launches a dialysis fund and attend a workers' event in the Merlimau Industrial Park.

6.30pm Kerdau: The 1Malaysia NGO organises a dinner at Kerdau town.

7pm Kerdau: Imam Muda finalist Nuri Ali is scheduled to attend a Maulidur Rasul event at the Lipat Kajang mosque.

8pm Kerdau: BN candidate Syed Ibrahim Syed Ahmad attends the 1Malaysia NGO dinner at SJK(C) Kerdau.

Health Minister and Pahang MCA chief Liow Tiong Lai asks the 600-strong crowd, all of whom are wearing 1Malaysia T-shirts, to vote for BN tomorrow.

9.30pm Merlimau: Former Penang deputy chief minister Fairus Khairuddin delivers yet another 'expose talk' alongside another PKR turncoat Lokman Adam in Jasin Lalang.

Both BN and PAS are not hosting any big events tonight, while MCA and DAP are both holding small last-minute talks, headlined by MCA Youth chief Wee Ka Siong and DAP veep Tan Kok Wai.

MIC, meanwhile, is hosting a big pop concert beside Merlimau Estate. Buses are lined at the roadside as at least 1,000 attend the concert.

The usually quiet one-street town of Merlimau is clogged with traffic.

9.50pm Kerdau: A long traffic jam is inching forward on the only road cutting through Kerdau, trailing at least 2km towards the BN command centre.

Traffic has been held up for at least 30 minutes by the many cars parked along the road, and by many more trying to find parking to attend one of several BN ceramah events.

PAS meanwhile has taken a quiet approach for its campaign finale, bringing together PAS members and the faithful to perform sembahyang hajat at several locations around the constituency.

10pm Merlimau: At a DAP ceramah, the party vice-president Tan Kok Wai works the crowd.

He urges the voters to create a second tsunami in Merlimau. The ceramah attracted over 200 people.

Another speaker, DAP Malacca treasurer Damien Yeo modifies the "Rasa Sayang" song to "Rasuah Sayang".

"Rasuah sayang, hey, Ali Rustam rasuah sayang, hei," he sings.

Meanwhile, the MCA-organised ceramah in a vacant lot near Merlimau Hokkien association, which serves both food and entertainment, also attracted some 200 people.

Video clips of hudud punishment were screened.

MCA vice-president Gan Peng Sieu describes PAS as a wolf and DAP as its doggy.

He calls on the Chinese community to support PM Najib as he has taken the political risk to challenge the conservative faction within Umno in order to help the Chinese community.

Gan warns that the Umno conservatives will be more powerful if the Chinese community fails to back Najib to show that he has the support of Malaysians.

11.05pm Merlimau: Anwar Ibrahim's former aide Anuar Shaari joins the list of former PKR members who are campaigning for BN in Merlimau, this time to about 300 people in Merlimau Pasir.

Down the road, at the PAS venue, about 600 listen to local leaders PAS Youth information chief Suhaizat Kayat.

About 100 others are huddled around televisions watching recordings of speeches by Anwar.

NONE 11.18pm Merlimau: About three tonnes of rice is being given out to the audience at the MIC concert near Merlimau Estate, in addition to other gifts.

Meanwhile in Merlimau Pasir, former PKR leader Roslan Kassim informs the audience that police have extended their permit from up to 12am to 2am.

12 midnight Merlimau/Kerdau: The eight-day campaign comes to a close. The cooling off period begins. 

Polling will be from 8am to 5pm tomorrow. Results expected at 8pm.
