Quigonbond: Chin is what you call a political appointment. The man has no say, and has nothing good to say, as (1) he wasn't appointed because he has passion for environmental issues, (2) he may have ideas but politics is beyond his control, (3) and he's just another number in the cabinet.

DAP says 'No' to serial number on Malay Bible

Holy books should be freely available to all. There are no restrictions in the constitution to bar proselyting to non-Muslims, so why then should there be restrictions for other religions?

That is part and parcel of the fundamental right of freedom to practice one's religion. Just as predicted - the cabinet made up of Umno ministers is trying to outdo PAS in being more Islamic.

"For non-Muslims" was something that Dr Mahathir Mohamad as the home minister many years ago stipulated for Christian literature such as tracts, newsletters (excluding the Bible), etc. Those days, tracts were freely distributed at homes, and there was the fear that weak-minded Muslims may actually convert to Christianity.

Today, this phrase is basically obsolete with the advent of the Internet. To insist on ‘For Christians Only' would mean from now onwards, Muslims must not comment on Christian issues, since they can no longer read the Bible, which is the infallible word of God, as the Christian faith professes.

By not being able to read the Bible, Malaysian Muslims would not have the right reference materials. As for serialising the Bible, the Bible has the most number of copies printed book since Man invented printing. So how?

NuckinFuts: Let me guess... if serial numbers are not allowed, some Umno crony will probably come up with a mandatory Bible hologram (made by Umno cronies) for every Bible in the country. They have already done it for our medicines, so why not for Bibles?

Singa Pura Pura: Assuming that the imprinting of both the prohibitory warning as well as the serial numbers was an act that could lawfully be carried out by the home minister and/or KDN, would it be contrary to law for a lawful owner of the book to subsequently erase or otherwise remove/replace the pages that have been affected by the stamping/branding?
