Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Mohd Nazri Abdul Aziz has agreed with a backbencher that there is “no other government in the world” that is as kind as BN in helping victims of recent floods in six states.

He said the federal NONE government’s decision to hand out RM52 million in aid to flood victims in Johor, Malacca, Negri Sembilan, Pahang, Sabah and Sarawak is proof that BN holds the people’s interests close to heart.

“It’s true, the BN government always thinks of the people and is kind,” Nazri (left) said during Question time in the Dewan Rakyat today.

In a supplementary question, Mohamad Aziz (BN-Sri Gading) had declared that “in this world, there is no other government other than the BN that is this kind”.

When answering the main question from Lim Lip Eng (DAP-Segambut), Nazri said the government had spent about RM27.9 million to help relocate 90,000 flood victims and provide them with daily necessities.

The government NONE spent a total of RM24.9 million in giving out RM500 cash aid to each family affected by floods between the end of 2010 and early 2011.

Nazri noted that the Natural Resource and Environment Ministry has completed a comprehensive study on nationwide flood prevention. This will be implemented in stages due to the high cost .

He pointed out that, while the government will continue with its Flood Mitigation Plan, it is not a total solution to the problem and must include other steps, especially considering the climate change which is affecting the whole world.

“Disaster awareness also needs to be instilled in society... (on the) disaster management mechanism, explanations on the cause of a disaster and steps to prevent and prepare for a disaster, and increasing public participation in the event of a disaster,” he added.
