PM meets Christians: Hope for the best but...

your say 'What is the PM going to tell the Christian group? ‘Let us forget and forgive?' Or is he going to inform them as to what action he has taken against Utusan?'

Najib to meet Christian group tomorrow

Anonymous_3de1: The Council of Churches of Malaysia (CCM) should demand that the PM Najib Razak order Utusan Malaysia to publicly apologise to all Christian Malaysians for stirring up this tension and take punitive action against this gutter daily.

Also, ask the PM what he has been done to leash the rabid dogs that started this potentially dangerous situation. Don't fall for his sweet talk of tolerance and the need to understand the feelings of some people in Umno, Perkasa and other riff-raff groupings of has-been politicians.

Though it is a closed-door meeting as requested by Najib, you owe it to the aggrieved Christians to disclose what transpired during the meeting. Short of this, you will bear the brunt of their displeasure for selling them out.

For too long and too often, we have offered the other cheek to these religious bigots and sewage dredgers.

KSN: What is the PM going to tell the Christian group? ‘Let us forget and forgive?' Or is he, as the PM of Malaysia, a country with freedom of religion - except the Muslims of course - going to inform them as to what action he and his government have taken against the bloggers involved and the Utusan ?

Is not the behaviour of the group a national security threat, to peace and harmony in the country? Is he going to ask the Christian group to forgive the sinners? They might, but a fair government should not.

Firm and decisive action should be taken against this group regardless of their affiliation to Umno as a stern warning to other fanatical groups who are hell-bent on creating chaos in the country.

Anonymous_4196 Meet Christian groups for what? These people did not cause any trouble. They are the victims, as far as I can see. They had been under constant attack by the pro-Umno newspapers and NGOs, which spread lies and create imaginary threats. Najib, control your people first, then talk. Otherwise, cakap kosong saja .

Anonymous: While I do believe in dialogue, closed-door meetings and what not, I think Christian groups are suckers. They are having too much of these meetings with the government without any significant results. They love to have all these types of meetings with the government and Najib knows he can pacify them through such means.

For once, tell the government not to waste your time and energy. Ask the government to meet up with Utusan and reprimand the perpetrators.

Kee Thuan Chye: What's the point of Najib meeting the Christian groups? So he can sweet-talk them? Make a deal with them? The time for talk is over. He should walk the walk.

The first thing he should do before the Christians should agree to see him is take strong action against Utusan . Suspend its licence. Punish its editor-in-chief. Tell the paper to once and for all stop fanning racial and religious flames. Has he got the cojones to do that? If he doesn't, the Christian groups should say, "Sorry, Mr Prime Minister, we won't waste our time meeting with you."

Come on, Christian groups, stand your ground. You did nothing wrong in the first place, Utusan says you did, and now you want to entertain Najib? Let him prove his sincerity first.

Kingfisher: The CCM representatives should categorically advise the PM that the time is now opportune for him and that it is beholden on him to take upon himself the task of eradicating any attempts by national mainstream papers at propagating policies that could precipitate religious and racial strive and undermine economic security and national unity.

One gets a strong suspicion that much of the prevailing unhealthy attempts at undermining unity is being initiated by elites and elitist organisations in society and not by the ordinary man. If social strife results from all the postering and acrimony, the people will in the final analysis deem it fit to blame the blameworthy.

Cannon: The leadership of the CCM should firmly request the PM to tell his cousin in the Home Ministry to think before he opens his mouth to speak. Hishammuddin Hussein has offended the Christian community not once, but five times:

1) Blocking the importation and circulation of the Al-Kitab.

2) Serialisation of the Al-Kitab.

3) Prolonging resolution of the dispute over the use of the name of Allah by applying to the Court of Appeal to overturn the lower court's decision in favour of the church.

4) Calling the Holy Bible 'smelly' .

5) Labelling the Christian church as a 'seditious movement' .

They should require him to retract his offensive words and to apologise.

Atan-Toyol: I can't believe that Najib believes in the Utusan report about the Christian pastors and DAP planning to amend the constitution to make Christianity the official religion.

I think most non-Muslims in Malaysia want a secular state, and would never aspire for the country to have an official religion, if at all. So how can the PM be so naive as to call for this meeting with the pastors?

He should verify with Utusan first about the authenticity of the report. Has he never read the Quranic injunction that when a 'fasik' (sinner) comes with a story to you, you should investigate to ascertain the truth of the story first?' Or does Najib only know how to ‘sumpah laknat' (swear) on the Quran, but has never bothered to know what the Quran teaches?

Don't expect Najib to reprimand Utusan over this incidence. The paper has been given a blanket approval by Umno to publish whatever it deems fit to ensure survival of Umno after the 13th GE. Don't hope he is going do the right thing in this matter.

If he does, his own position in Umno may be in jeopardy. He will need retain the presidency of Umno, and for that he needs Utusan .

1Rakyat Malaysia : CCM, don't back down. Demand the PM to take action against Utusan for creating religious tension. Tell the PM of the Christians' stand that you do not take nonsense from this newspaper. The newspaper should be charged and close down for inciting religious hatred.

Christian conspiracy impossible: Khir Toyo

Paul Warren: For one moment I thought Dr Mohd Khir Toyo actually had brains. But then I had to stop myself because if he really had any, he would have already migrated anyway. Reading along, I could see where exactly he comes from.

Obviously in 1969 being a young boy and son of an immigrant from Java, I expect the focus of the family's conversations would have been the goings-on in Java. So obviously he would not have known that in 1969 the ‘Chinese' party to have made the greatest inroads politically was Gerakan and they, more than DAP, if at all, contributed to the start of the May 13 imbroglio.

But of course, true to Umno mentality that stifles brain growth, he conveniently ignores the fact that Umno, more than anyone else, started the May 13 flare up. After all, have they not been the beneficiary of the threats of May 13 that they frequently enough referred to until that bluff was called in 2008?

Ferdtan: Khir's opening statement that he did not believe the 'alleged plot by Christian leaders to make Christianity an official religion', sounds sensible.

But why did he have to spoil it all by talking more than necessary, and talking gibberish, after that? After his loss of his position of Selangor menteri besar in the March 2008 general election, his defeat in the Umno Youth chief contest and was later replaced as the Selangor BN opposition chief, he has become irrelevant.

We suggest that he retire from politics and 're-sharpen' his dentistry skills.

Bertrand Russell: Khir talks like the guardian angel of Utusan - it is alright for Utusan to write such reports since they are trying to find the best sensational news to attract greater readership.

What's happening in our country is the result of the divide-and-rule policy of Umno. Umno keeps telling lies, Perkasa keeps telling lies and eventually they all hope that all these lies will help them to keep Putrajaya.

EugeneT: Everything that Khir has said are pure fallacies. First, he claims other news have been publishing "sedition, lies and slander", and asks why only Utusan is being targeted. He is making a false presumption of "other news outlets" in attempt to appeal to Utusan's defence. What and where are these "other news outlets" you speak of Khir?

Lastly, he committed a hasty false generalisation by claiming that CFM and DAP holding a joint press conference is suspicious and makes CFM out as being partisan. Why should it be suspicious to be in defence against those lies spouted by Utusan ?

There are many more false accusations and fallacies mentioned by Khir that make you question his intelligence.

KBE: The Christian Federation of Malaysia (CFM) had to hold a joint press conference with DAP because these two parties were accused of acting together by Utusan . There's no question of being better or sweeter if the CFM held the press conference on its own as Khir Toyo suggests.

Retnam: This is the moron who destroyed a Hindu temple in October 2007, just two weeks before Deepavali . The venerated deity is so powerful that he lost everything after the general election of March 2008. Now the clown is talking about religious tolerance?
