The police moved in to disperse a 300-strong crowd of students who had planned to march from the National Mosque to the Kuala Lumpur magistrate's court in support of seven other undergraduates on trial for illegal assembly.

In the process, the police arrested the Students Abolish ISA (Internal Security Act) Movement ( Gabungan Mahasiswa Mansuhkan ISA or GMMI) spokesperson Syahrir Mahmood ( left ) who had tried to negotiate with the police to allow them to participate in the peaceful march.

He was taken to the Dang Wangi district police headquarters but was released at 7.30pm on police bail. He is required to report to the police station on Aug 1.

The seven undergraduates - from four local universities - have been suspended by their universities for attending an anti-ISA demonstration two years ago at the National Mosque. Their trial started on Monday and continued this afternoon.
