The High Court in Shah Alam has set May 23 to hear the revision application filed by attorney-general Abdul Gani Patail over the open verdict delivered by the Coroner’s Court on Jan 5 in the inquest into the death of political aide Teoh Beng Hock, Teoh’s family lawyer Karpal Singh said today.  

Karpal Singh, when contacted, also confirmed that the matter would be heard before Justice Mohtarudin Baki.

“This is a very important revision for the family in seeking justice for Teoh and that was the main reason we did not participate in the royal commission of inquiry,” he explained. The Teoh family had withdrawn from the proceedings of the commission of inquiry.

Coroner Azmil Muntapha Abas had ruled that the death of Teoh in 2009 was neither a suicide nor homicide.

Teoh, political secretary to Selangor executive councillor Ean Yong Hian Wah, was found dead on July 16, 2009, on the fifth floor corridor of Plaza Masalam in Shah Alam after he had given a statement at the office of the Selangor branch of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) on the 14th floor of the same building.  

Karpal Singh also told Bernama that the revision application by Teoh’s family on contempt proceedings against Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Mohd Nazri Abdul Aziz would be heard on June 6 before Judge Akhtar Tahir.

Azmil Muntapha, who heard the application during the inquest, had ruled that there was no clear or solid evidence that Mohd Nazri’s alleged statement that Thai pathologist Dr Pornthip Rojanasunan was a “liar” was an attempt to interfere in the inquest.
