Opposition parliamentarians urged the government to include independent parties to be involved in the inquiry relating to a recent nude squat incident in Johor.

Yesterday, Home Minister Hishammuddin Hussein announced that the ministry and the police will probe into reports that the Johor Immigration Department forced two Singaporean women to strip naked and perform squats.

Hishammuddin had said that besides the police, officials from the Immigration Department and the Prisons Department will be in the task force.

“Although we welcome the move, we are of the opinion that the inquiry should also involve representatives from the Human Right Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam), the Bar Council and members of parliament,” said Fong Po Kuan (DAP-Batu Gajah).

Chua Soon Boi (Ind-Tawau) and Sim Ting Him (DAP-Kota Melaka), who also agreed with Fong, felt that the incident, which might affect both countries bilateral relation, must be resolved as soon as possible.

Last week, Singaporean Chinese daily Lianhe Zaobao reported that the two women were detained on suspicion of being illegal immigrants after they forgot to stamp their passports en route to Johor Baru for supper on June 9.

The pair were detained at a lock-up in Pontian, where they were allegedly told to strip and perform 10 squats naked before they were given clothes meant for detainees and held for 24 hours.
