The last person to see customs officer Ahmad Sarbaini Mohamad alive, testified in the inquest into his death that the late Selangor customs deputy chief seemed quite all right before being found dead.

NONE "He seemed normal, there was nothing amiss about him," said assistant superintendent Kamal Awang Besar ( right ), the eighth witness to testify before coroner Aizatul Akmal Maharani at the Jalan Duta Court Complex today.

Kamal described how he was asked to "look after" Ahmad Sarbaini for a while, by the head of Kuala Lumpur MACC investigations unit, Mohd Fauzi Hussin, as the senior investigating officer responsible for the case was otherwise occupied.

He then escorted the deceased to a witness holding room, where he spent two minutes chatting with Ahmad Sarbaini.

Kamal then said he left the deceased for a while to consult with his senior investigation officer Abdul Ghani Ali on who would later watch over Ahmad Sarbaini as they were due to leave for an operation.

After consulting his superior he was told that they were no longer required to leave as one of the people that they were supposed to go looking for was on the way to the office.

Ghani then told him to bring Ahmad Sarbaini out for drinks with them.

Kamal returned to the witness holding room after about six to seven minutes after consulting with his superior.

It was then that he found Ahmad Sarbaini missing.

Face down

Alerting his colleagues, they searched the entire floor and lobby downstairs in vain for the customs officer until one of them, a female assistant superintendent named Henrietta, thought to go into the pantry and saw Ahmad Sarbaini 's body sprawled face down in a pool of blood on a terrace two floors below.

She then rushed out of the pantry exclaiming "Pok sudah dibawah! Pok sudah dibawah!" related Kamal who then went into the pantry and saw for himself the body which he recognised as Ahmad Sarbaini from his clothes.

However he maintained that he did not know how the body got there, nor if he knew if anyone was complicit.

He said this while testifying in the fourth day of the inquest into Ahmad Sarbaini 's death.

NONE Ahmad Sarbaini ( left ) was found dead on April 6, on the first floor badminton court of the MACC building located on Jalan Cochrane.

He allegedly fell out of the third floor pantry window in mysterious circumstances after going to to see an MACC officer to change his testimony.

Lawyer Avtar Singh representing Ahmad Sarbaini 's family in the inquest, however challenged Kamal's testimony.

He focused his inquiry based on the fact that Kamal was suspended from his duties in connection with the incident.

"You were suspended for one month and three weeks. A long time. Were you involved in his death? Why else why would you be suspended."

The officer replied that as far as he knew, he was suspended because he was the one overseeing the customs officer at the time of the incident.

He said he was not linked with Ahmad Sarbaini's death, maintaining that the customs officer's death is a mystery which he too wanted to solve.

However Awtar continued to press Kamal. "Were you trying to hide details of his death? Maybe to save your skin? Or protect your agency?

"I put it that you and Sheikh Nizar were responsible in the matter?" pressed Awtar further.

Sheikh was the officer who recorded Ahmad Sarbaini 's testimony on April 4 and was the one the deceased went to see on April 6. He was also suspended at the same time as Kamal in relation to Sarbaini's death.

However, Kamal continued to reiterate that he did not know anything about the tragedy.
