Former actor turned religious speaker Azmil Mustapha has denied accusations that he insulted the Malays, the federal government and the Agong in a sermon on Friday.

Azmil was famous in the 1980s for a string of highly successful comedies and movies, including the popular movie ‘Ali Setan’.    

“I did not utter any statements that was seditious, let alone insult the Agong,” he told Utusan Malaysia yesterday.

The former actor said his talk last Friday night at a mosque in Shah Alam was based on the teachings of the Qur’an and did not touch on political developments.

“Some of the teachings I touched on was how Muslims must put Allah first over any human, no matter who he or she is.

“I do not have any affiliations with any political party in the country,” he stressed.

According to a report, several police reports were lodged by members of the Masjid An-Nur in Kampung Melayu Subang where Azmil spoke that night.

When informed of the matter Azmil expressed shock that complaints had been filed with the police against him.

Petaling Jaya police chief Arjunaidi Mohamed the police were investigating the matter under Section 4 of the Sedition Act 1948.

“In the course of the investigation, we may call a few individuals, including Azmil,” Arjunaidi told Utusan .
