Penang DAP has detected voters with similar identity card numbers and fears that they may be phantom voters.

The party has also found that many nonagenarians (those 90 years old and above) have been deleted from the electoral roll although they are still alive.

NONE Komtar assemblyperson Ng Wei Aik ( right ) said the discrepancies over the IC numbers were found at the Kem Tun Razak, Markas 2 Divisyen in the Batu Maung electoral roll.

Batu Maung seat is held by PKR's Abdul Malik Abul Kassim, and the  constituency was recently found to have an increase of 1,400 voters.

Ng said three sets of voters with the same IC numbers detected so far are: Roziah bt Nordin and Sujiah bt Mohd Sidek (7225477); Gustina bt Ahmad and Zarina bt A Rahim (A1283855) and Norazwani bt Daud and Rohaila bt Zulkifli (A3455269)

"After we found that 1,400 new postal votes were registered in the Batu Maung camp, we used (an) Excel (programme) to check the roll, and suspect they are phantom voters," he said.

"We found that six had different new IC numbers, and their husbands who are army personnel, also have numbers which are different (from their actual ICs)," he added.

"This shows something is very wrong with the Election Commission," he added.

NONE Ng's comment follows recent revelation by Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng ( left ) that the state saw a sudden surge of 26,000 voters in just three months, with an additional 6,000 being dropped from the list due to change of address and death.

Ng, who is Lim's political secretary, said he wants to see how fast the EC would swing into action to correct its "mistakes".

Otherwise, the party would lodge a formal complain soon, he added.

Ng also said the DAP was setting up a special task force to probe the suspicious nature of some information it had found on the electoral roll.

The party was training volunteers to help it identify suspected phantom voters, said Ng, where house visits to verify the information would be conducted.

On the alleged deleted nonagenarians, the state DAP Socialist Youth secretary said they were deleted as their record in the National Registration Department was "inactive".

"If they were accidentally deleted, we can help to re-register them," he added.

Ng also criticised the EC for being "very unprofessional" for merely publishing the names of voters on the website as senior citizens would find it difficult to verify their details.

He said the EC should "go to the ground" to check if their roll was accurate and viable for the coming polls.

He added that DAP was also launched the final round of voters registration until Sept 4 before the polls.The EC deadline to register new voters are on Sept 15.

"We are targeting 1,000 new voters for each constituency. Since this is a long holiday, this is an opportunity for us to register those working outside Penang who have returned for the holidays," he added.
