Mat Sabu, thanks for the history lesson

your say 'Thank you for making Malaysians think for themselves for once, rather then believing one version of our history.'

Mat Sabu: Tunku may not be PM if there was referendum

Do190811: In my opinion, PAS deputy president Mat Sabu is not trying to say who is the hero or who is the traitor. What he wants is to open the rakyat's mind, and not to just swallow the distorted version of history 'manufactured' by those with hidden agendas.

For those who were ‘Obedient Servant' of ‘Her Majesty's Service' can still be heroes dutifully carrying their civil duties at that time under that circumstances.

The villains are those who distort history lopsidedly and care not the consequences of dividing the nation. To me, Mat Sabu just wants the truth to be told, and that it is not just one particular race or party that have fought for the country's independence.

It is the effort of all Malayans (then) and therefore the fruits of independence should be shared by all, not just the Umnoputras. Anyone disagree?

Geronimo: My late father, who worked under the British Military Administration i.e. before Aug 31, 1957, had always signed off official documents with ‘Your Obedient Servant' on letterheads marked: ‘On Her Majesty's Service'.

This would have meant that his loyalty was with the British administration and to the Queen of England. In return that would have made him an agent of the British since he was also on their payroll.

What about those police officers who perished in Bukit Kepong? The incident took place in 1950. Would they not have signed official documents ending with ‘Your Obedient Servant' on ‘Her Majesty's Service' letterhead?

If you are a servant of the British colonists, would that make you a hero or a traitor? It is so straight forward, and yet the simple minds could not comprehend the logic.

Abil: Thank you, Mat Sabu, for making Malaysians think for themselves for once, rather then believing one side of the history. The victors always write their own version of the history. Now we realise there need to be independent researchers to derive the truth.

Why are Malaysians afraid of their own history? Whatever good or bad, we can still learn from it. A nation that forgets its own history is a failed nation.

Kyw: Now it is clear why history should never be made a compulsory subject. Mat Sabu's history of our Independence is just as interesting as Umno's.

Lusiapa: Unwittingly, Mat Sabu has put to shame the so-called local historians who have no qualms in aiding and abetting the Umno-led government in perpetuating half-truths and downright lies in the minds of young Malaysians all these years.

Let's have more revelations, please. The rakyat have been taken for a ride long enough.

Bil: Mat Sabu has let the shit hit the fan. At least, it's good as we won't be believing in what Umno wants us to believe. There is no good guys or bad guys as events happened for a purpose.

But the worst guys are the guys who distort the facts for their own agenda. Umno was not the only one fighting for independence. There were many from other parties and races who had sacrifice their lives so that we are where we are today.

Nasir Zihni Yusoff 3999: Saudara Mat Sabu has said it. It's up to us to take it on and move forward.

The British legacy about choosing who were the patriots and traitors should be settled. We have to know the truth on who were the independence fighters (fighting for country) and who had worked and defended the British administration (following orders) so that proper recognition can be accorded to them.

Black Mamba: Mat Sabu's remarks are good for the current generation of Malays who have been living under a big BN coconut shell for too long and now comes the shining light of the full moon from PAS.

This is what we would label as critical thinking in today's educational curriculum. Thinking out of the box, questioning the what if it didn't happened or what if it had happened otherwise.

It is about time Malaysians as a whole start questioning the legitimacy of an Umno president who automatically becomes our prime minister due to the outcome of the votes of 2,000-plus Umno delegates who are in actual fact warlords of their own little fiefdom who ultimately become the cronies of the premier for voting him in.

Bernard Phillips: Mat Sabu is most definitely stirring the pot and turning Malaysian history on its head. I am not sure where all this heading, but I do find this very interesting.

For too long we have been fed information which was never challenged or explored. Now here is a man who is not afraid to call it as he sees it. I hope that others who can contribute will do so. In the meantime, go Mat Sabu.

Avatar 111: Here is Lee Kuan Yew's latest statement about politics: Political divide should not become nation divide.

Let's look at Malaysia, 54 years after independence, the country had not produced a single visionary leader who would not divide the nation and the people according to race, religion and even culture.

In order to fight and retain political powers, all the past, present (and would-be future) leaders would not hesitate to divide the nation and its people based on racial and religious lines to achieve their aims.

In the process, all the evil seeds of division, hatred, discontent and confusion were sowed and planted.

Now, all these evil seeds have been nurtured to bear fruits. Our people are now divided in almost everything imaginable - race, religion, culture and even gender...
