His daughter Nurul Huda confirmed the 12.30am incident, saying their neighbours put out the fire - which damaged part of fence and the front porch - before informing her.
“I didn’t see the fire. When I came out of the house (the fire) had been doused. I only smelt oil and gas,” said the 27-year-old lawyer, who was alone in the house at the time.
Her mother, when contacted, confirmed the incident but could not give much details as she is in Perlis. Mohamad is believed to have been in Penang for a programme at the time.
Nurul Huda said she contacted the police immediately after being informed of the incident.
“The police came at around 1am. I made a report there and then, and got a copy this morning,” she said when contacted.
Nurul Huda said she did not feel afraid although this was her first such experience, saying she had a feeling something like this was going to happen.
“I had felt uneasy over the past two or three days, (ever) since the street light in front of my house failed to come on. So I decided to be careful,” she said.
Motive not known
PKR leader Badrul Hisham Shaharin was the first to send out information about the incident, posting it on Twitter.
The motive of the attack remains unknown at the time of writing.
On Sept 8, Mohamad, who is widely known as Mat Sabu, claimed he received an SMS from an unknown individual who threatened to throw acid on his wife and daughter.
The message read:
Awak memang patut bertaubat. Cakap tanpa fakta... Awak pembohong, mulut celupar. Mungkin awak tak serik, jangan sampai ada masa akan (di)simbah asid ke atas isteri dan anak perempuan awak.
(You should repent. Speaking without facts... you are a liar, blabber mouth. You may not let up, don’t let it reach the point that acid is splashed on your wife and daughter.)
Mat Sabu said he considered the SMS a serious threat, and believes it was brought on as a result of reports by Umno-owned Malay daily Utusan Malaysia on Aug 27, which he claimed were defamatory.
The reports were related to his remarks about the role of Mat Indera (right) in the 1950 Bukit Kepong massacre and the history of Malaysia’s independence.
