The National Registration Department (NRD) today brushed aside demands by PAS Youth to set up a royal commission of inquiry to investigate misappropriation of the issuance of identity cards.

This, according to its public relation officer Janisah Mohd Noor in a statement yesterday, is because the memorandum submitted by PAS Youth detailing allegations of misappropriation has been proven untrue.

azlan “With regard to the issue of individuals with identical names possesing almost identical IC numbers (in the Election Comission electoral roll database), JPN’s records show that in nine of the ten cases, the individuals were unique and had different fingerprints.”

The last name, Janisah says, was that of Azinah binti Mohd Fazin (800820-02-5150) which could not be found in its record.

Despite the rebuttal that the ICs are not fake, the EC mysteriously removed one of each pair from its system after it was first revealed by PAS Youth.

“On the alleged fake ICs in the EC electoral roll database, JPN reiterates that it has never issued fake ICs and the records we supply to the EC for voter identification are authentic.”

The NRD was referring to a batch of ten alleged ‘false IC’ cases revealed by PAS Youth on Sept 19.

‘No IC for foreigners’

Adressing the issue of alleged invalid country codes in ICs, Janisah stated that the country code of 71 is valid and is for all foreign born individuals prior to 2001 as the country-specific code had not been introduced then.

azlan In a separate statement, the NRD also responded to a letter in Berita Harian , denying that it issued IC to foreigners in Sabah.

“We reiterate here that ICs are only issued to Malaysian citizens based on documents such as birth certificates, citizenship certificates and Form W.

“As for foreigners, regardless of race or religion, only those who have obtained citizenship status and a citizenship certificate will be issued with ICs,” said Janisah.

The statements comes after PAS Youth submitted a memorandum early last month demanding an investigation into alleged abuses in the issuance of ICs.
