DAP parliamentary leader Lim Kit Siang has proposed that those civil servants who authorised government procurements above their market price pay for the cost surcharge out of their own pockets.

He touted this as an easy way to end financial irregularities highlighted in successive Auditor-General's Reports.

"Malaysians are entitled to know why such financial hanky-panky and irregularities could not be stamped out when there should be quite easy ways of achieving this objective," he said in a statement today.

However, said the Ipoh Timur MP, this would only be possible if the "big sharks" who abuse public funds are also brought to justice.

He cited the case of a car jack , normally sold for around RM50, that had been purchased for RM5,700.

Lim, who claimed that the government loses an estimated RM28 billion a year to corruption and malpractice, also criticised the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission as "completely impotent and ineffective" in taking action against civil servants.

"Unless there is the political will to launch an all-out war against corruption including those occupying high political and government positions under a “no tolerance for corruption” campaign,  financial abuses and malpractices as those retailed in the Auditor-General Annual Reports will continue to be an annual and commonplace occurrence."
