Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) has served student activist Adam Adli Abdul Halim notice to appear for a disciplinary hearing on Jan 9 over the Najib flag incident.

The student's lawyer Fadiah Nadwa Fikri revealed this in a tweet today.

In a statement, PKR vice-president N Surendran commented on the grounds for UPSI’s actions, namely that Adam has “damaged the good name” of the institution and that he had “endangered morals and public order”.

NONE He said the UPSI’s accusations were “baseless, unconstitutional, illegal and plainly absurd”, reiterating that Adam was merely exercising his right to freedom of expression.

“Adam's action was a legitimate and democratic protest against (Prime Minister) Najib (Abdul Razak’s) failure to ensure student and academic freedom by repealing the University and University Colleges Act (UUCA).

“It was also a protest against Najib's attempt to deceive Malaysian students by announcing superficial and incomplete reforms,” said Surendran, also a human rights lawyer.

UPSI's notice comes shortly after Suara Rakyat Malaysia (Suaram) this morning called on all university and colleges to stop taking  action against student protestors involved in last Saturday's freedom of assembly march.

The NGO also slammed the continued harassment and intimidation that Adam ( above ) and his family had  allegedly been subjected to.

“We also call for an end to the continued harassment, threat and intimidation against student activists, which became apparent after a recent student-led protest,” said a representative from the NGO in a statement today.

Suaram called on the police to guarantee the student and his family’s safety.

“Given the multiple threats against him and well-documented in the media and on social media platforms, the police must take steps to ensure he and his family are free from harm.”

They also wanted the police to immediately investigate the threats and for the educational institutions to stop any action against the students for their participation in the weekend rally.

Adam, a 22-year-old Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) student, landed in controversy after lowering a flag depicting Najib Abdul Razak's at the Umno headquarters at the Putra World Trade Centre, Kuala Lumpur last Saturday.

Attempted assault outside police premises

According to Suaram, Adam has since received threats to his personal safety and on Monday was nearly assaulted at the entrance to the Bukit Aman headquarters after his meeting with police officials over the matter.

“A minor scuffle broke out, during which an unidentified man who later introduced himself to be Ruslan Mokhtar tried to punch Adam.

“Adam suspected that the assailant was a plainclothes policeman who was present when Adam met with the police officers earlier. He also noted that none of the uniformed personnel tried to break the scuffle,” said the Suaram rep.

 

“He lodged a report at the Tun HS Lee police station in regard to the scuffle as well as the harassment he and his family in Penang are facing.”

“The police must investigate Adam’s report on the assault against him and charge the assailant if there is evidence of wrongdoing, notwithstanding that he is a former policeman,” said the NGO.

Adam was called in to IPD Dang Wangi this morning at 11 to give his statement, after which he has scheduled a press conference.
