The National Union of Journalists (NUJ) has urged the Election Commission to establish a committee to monitor the media during the upcoming election campaign.

In a press release today, NUJ secretary-general V Anbalagan said the committee should have powers to censure those who violate any guidelines.

Anbalagan NUJ secretary "This committee would then be able to ensure that the cabinet decision and ethical journalism are adhered to," said Anbalagan.

He was referring to the cabinet decision to allow all contesting parties airtime on public and private broadcasting stations.

The NUJ has also urged all media organisations to provide equal and fair coverage during the upcoming general election.

Anbalagan ( left ) said this was a form of "national service" to help the public make an informed choice.

It said that government-owned media agencies such as RTM and Bernama should broadcast the contents of party manifestos during prime time slots.

"Representatives of political parties should be also given equal opportunities and explain their policies and public issues, also during prime time," he said.

As for private media organisations, Anbalagan said they should provide equal coverage as it this constitutes ethical practice.

"We also call upon the print and online media owners to sell advertising space to all political parties," he said.
