Police today confirmed that there was no foul play in the death of R Magesvaran, 29, who was found hanged in a toilet at the Petaling Jaya district police headquarters last Thursday night.

PJ Utara district deputy police chief Osman Bakar told malaysiakini this morning that "the coroner's report has classified this as a case of death by hanging".

"There will not be any further investigations as we believe there was no foul play here. There was no sign of a struggle," he said.

The family and friends of the deceased have claimed that Magesvaran could not have committed suicide.

Bruises found

His uncle, N Balamurugan, said: "As far as we (family) know, he did not have any problems that would have driven him to commit suicide. Furthermore why would he go to a police station to kill himself? It's absurd."

Sources also alleged today that "the family noticed bruises on the lower abdomen of the body after they claimed it from the morgue (last Friday)...they have taken photos of the bruises".

A canteen employee found the body hanging from the ceiling of the toilet some six hours after Magesvaran had been seen at the station. He had apparently gone to lodge a report at 4.30pm, although he did not file one.

He is believed to have faced problems at his workplace. Contrary to earlier information received, sources said today that the deceased had worked as a bouncer in a discotheque in Petaling Jaya.

In a related development, Parti Keadilan Rakyat deputy Youth chief S Manickavasagam ( photo ) lodged a report this afternoon at the PJ police headquarters, in support of a call to continue investigations into the case.

"Because of the weakness of the police in handling such cases, we want the special police commission to take over the investigations," said Manickavasagam in his report.
