The Anti-Corruption Agency (ACA) is investigating Selangor Criminal Investigation Department chief Abu Bakar Mustafa, a high-profile top cop, for alleged abuse of power pertaining to a case involving a woman and a loan shark.

According to sources, SAC II Abu Bakar, who is currently on leave, may be charged soon.

It is said the woman, who is believed to have a personal relationship with Abu Bakar, had taken a RM30,000 'friendly loan' from the money-lender using the CID chief's name.

Later, she refused to pay back the loan and threatened to use her high-level police connections against the loan shark.

Sources said when the money-lender demanded payment, he was allegedly arrested and held at the Selangor police headquarters in Shah Alam, where Abu Bakar is based.

Following this, the money-lender's wife had gone to the headquarters to inquire about her husband and was allegedly asked to pay RM50,000 to secure his release.

The disgruntled woman later filed a report with the Shah Alam district police headquarters and the Anti-Corruption Agency (ACA).

Investigation papers seized

Subsequently, sources claimed Abu Bakar had allegedly ordered that the investigation papers from the district headquarters pertaining to the report be handed over to him.

The ACA is also believed to have recorded a statement from a sergeant in the district headquarters in relation to the case. The woman linked to Abu Bakar has also been arrested.

On June 11, Abu Bakar is believed to have lodged a police report against the woman, in which he denied any involvement in the case.

A Malay Mail report two days later said the woman knew the 'senior police officer' as she had been providing him with information on criminal activities.

The report added that the woman, a high-stake gambler, was also threatened by the money-lender to settle the debt.

On June 13, Inspector-General of Police Mohd Bakri Omar said he was awaiting a report from the Selangor police chief on the matter.

He also warned police officers not to associate themselves with seedy characters in order to safeguard the image of the force.

Despite the controversy, Abu Bakar is known as a no-nonsense and tough crime buster, who comes down hard on criminals.
