Overhaul priority of police force, focus on crime

Police personnel poorly utilised in crime fighting

vox populi small thumbnail Not Confused: This is a very enlightening piece. I really had no idea that the CID (Criminal Investigation Department) has such a small slice of the personnel pie. It's no wonder that it takes hours for the police to appear at crime scenes (or maybe not appear at all).

The entire PDRM (Royal Malaysian Police) structure needs to be completely overhauled, with significantly greater priority placed on criminal investigation and much less on ensuring the security of the government of the day.

Blind Freddo: There you go. Undeniable proof that one of the main roles of the police force is to provide jobs for the unemployable. About 72 percent of the police force are unproductive.

Yap CS: It' a backhand compliment to Pakatan Rakyat that BN has to assign 72 percent of the police force (that is, public security plus Special Branch) to harass them full time.

And this does not take into account the smut creators, the bloggers, the spies and the infiltrators. In fact, keeping tabs on and harassing and otherwise intimidating the opposition is a major part of Malaysia's economy.

Ksn: With all the criticisms against the PDRM from various quarters, it is to be hoped that they will take the criticisms constructively and address all the weaknesses, and if necessary launch a complete revamp of the force.

Their priority is fighting crime effectively, concentrate on that, so that the general public feels safe at all times, everywhere.

They should be terrorising the robbers and gangsters, and eliminating them. The criminals should know that they will be caught or killed sooner or later, sending fear down their spines.

That is the atmosphere and approach the PDRM should create and adopt, urgently too. The perception, which is a word used too often now, will soon turn positive.

Anon_3b56: Patrol cars on alert to prevent serious crimes like robbery, murders, gang fights, drug dealing, human trafficking and illegal gambling are often more interested in catching minor traffic offenders.

God save our citizens when the excuse is always that the country has not enough police personnel to be put on duty.

Onyourtoes: Priority is very much an issue here, and this happens not just in the police force. I think most government departments and agencies are suffering from an overdose of pomp and too little actual work done.

Be that as it may, the impotency and lack of effectiveness of the police force are also very much due to incompetency and corruption that have become too rampant and pervasive at every level of the force.

I doubt very much the training modules of the police personnel are clearly understood and adhered to. Sometimes I do believe that the abuse of power and being trigger-happy could be due to ignorance of what in essence policing is all about.

For example, are these young police officers trained to be fair, to follow and be abided by law, or are they taught by the Biro Tatanegara (BTN) modules, the contents of which all of us by now are fully aware?

Then we have corruption which I think is a biggest culprit. You see, when an inspector is corrupt, he loses his moral and supervisory authority over the sergeants and corporals. And so down the line. How dare they reprimand and supervise their subordinates when they have plenty of skeletons to hide?

So eventually, everybody just gets along, with a tacit understanding, like abang and adik , that no one should rock the boat. Work done is incidental, rather than obligatory.

Kim Quek: These statistics speak for themselves.

We have been suffering from a police force which is primarily self-serving (sky-high management costs) and political-master-serving (high internal security costs) and only lastly people-serving (minor crime prevention costs). You bet your last dollar that this will remain so under the present regime.

Some in Umno want ulama wing

Sarajun Hoda: Another clear sign that mullahs have infiltrated and are now controlling Umno from within. If the non-Umno coalition partners cannot see this coming, get set for doom.

Clerics controlling Umno means controlling BN and by extension the nation. If this happens, the country is doomed.

See for yourself countries that have given too much power to its clerics. Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, Somalia, etc. It would be indeed a very sad day if the clerics are allowed to play God over us.

Bender: Setting up an ulama wing just so that you could compare yourself better with PAS? From our point of view - why bother? We already have PAS, it's the genuine article, no need to go for the fake one.

Yap CS: Ulama Umno would indeed be a unique beast. How much fantastic religious gymnastics can they do to justify the lying, the cheating, the adulterating, the stealing, the slandering, the corruption - the list goes on and on. It will truly be amazing.

Supercession: Indeed, using religion to cover up corruption, racism and nepotism won't enhance your credibility.

CiViC: Umno vice-president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said that the formation of the wing would end accusations that the party had "sidelined Islam", little did he realise his proposal actually further strengthened that point.

By proposing the ulama wing, he is basically admitting that Umno did sideline Islam. Food for thought - if Umno had been representing Malays but not Islam, what have they been fighting for? And based on what?

Hasn't Umno always been race above religion? So doesn't that mean that their priority is only to strengthen their members and leaders comprising of descendants of previous party leaders?
