PKR Youth volunteers will be mobilised to help safeguard the security of its bus which will be used for its nationwide Merdeka Rakyat campaign.

PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail said she could not have imagined the Sept 1 incident, in which the PKR bus was damaged in Kota Baru, would happen as Malaysia is a peaceful country.

NONE “We will increase security by having PKR Youth volunteers take turns in looking after the bus,” Wan Azizah told reporters after launching a trailer to be used in the Merdeka Rakyat nationwide campaign.

On Sept 1 at about 5am in Kota Baru, the PKR bus was damaged when its front windscreen was smashed and splashed with red paint. The bus was being used for the party’s de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim to campaign in Pahang and Kelantan.

According to Wan Azizah, the trailer, travelling alongside the bus will carry equipment, the side can be dropped and propped up to act as a stage for political rallies.

Meanwhile, PKR communications director Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad said this can cut costs for the party as previously stages were rented at a high cost.

He said the bus, loaded with a smaller stage, will be used to enter villages.

He added that party de facto leader Anwar and Selangor Menteri Besar Abdul Khalid Ibrahim had mulled over having a bus and trailer since 2007.

When asked, he said Abdul Khalid, who is footing the bill for the bus out of his own pocket, is likely to do the same for the trailer.

Wan Azizah also commented on the police investigations into several youths who surrendered to the police for allegedly stomping on photos of Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak and his wife Rosmah Mansor, saying the police should have also taken action against those who resorted to the same acts targetting Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng and Kelantan Menteri Besar Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat.

“If the police take action against those who stepped on a photo of Najib, why don’t they take action on those who had done the same on Lim and Nik Aziz. That is only fair. It is unfair if they take action only on those who stepped on the photo of the PM,” she said.

She, however, stressed that what the youths did was "impolite" ,  not reflecting eastern values.
