In a statement, Pengerang NGOs coalition committee member Hong Thian Hwa said that Kampung Sungai Buntu fishermen had contacted him after spotting the large number of dead fish in the water last Sunday afternoon.
On visiting that stretch of the coast yesterday, he noticed that the tide had washed many fish ashore. He also found a dead dog there.
Ong described this as “unusual”, also relaying the residents’ speculation that the dog might have died after eating the fish carcasses.
“There was an oil spill in 2010 that led to many fish dying. This is more serious,” he claimed.
In early September, a dead dugong with many slash wounds had been found near Kampung Sungai Rengit in Pengerang, which is identified as a habitat because of the presence of seaweed beds there.
