The Road Safety Department has said that it will soon organise a nationwide public consultation on reviewing speed limits on roads.

The move comes after heavy criticism of the Automated Enforcement System (AES) aimed at catching speedsters.

The opposition in particular had argued that the country's speed limits were outdated and unrealistic, thus drivers were falling victim to the AES.

According to the New Sunday Times today, department director-general Leslie Leon said the department was studying on how public consultation in this matter was conducted in other countries.

He said additional signboards warning motorists about the cameras would also be installed, pointing out that the system was not intended to "ambush" motorists.

"The AES cameras are not supposed to be hidden. There will be sufficient warning.

"Currently, the signboards are already there. We will also add additional signboards," he was quoted as saying.

The AES was set up by ATES Sdn Bhd and Beta Tegap Sdn Bhd for the government and in exchange, the two companies will be entitled to a cut of the summonses.

This model has received flak from the opposition which said that enforcement should not be made into a business.

Umno Youth too has voiced its concern about the system, calling for it to be reviewed.
