Penang BN Youth is now making an issue about a 10km run organised by Deputy Chief Minister I Mansor Othman on Chap Goh Meh night, Feb 24.

“Chap Goh Meh is a very important event for the Chinese. Single women will throw oranges (to wish for ideal marriage partners),” said state BN Youth chief Oh Tong Keong.

Asked if the activity was still being practised widely, Oh gave a resounding “yes”.

Oh quickly clarified that BN had nothing against the run, adding that the party supported “healthy sports events”.

NONE But this has now become an issue, Oh said, as DAP showed an “extreme reaction” when a private organisation held the Penang Run 2013 during Thaipusam in January.

DAP, led by its state Youth chief Ng Wei Aik ( right ), had then held a rally outside the Gerakan headquarters on Jalan Macalister and handed over a memorandum accusing the party of being “insensitive” to Hindus as several of their members sit in the event’s organising committee.

“Ng is a coward. When he was asked the question by the press (about the run on Chap Goh Meh), he merely told reporters to ask PKR,” Oh told a press conference.

“He did not respond in an extreme manner as he did towards Gerakan, nor has he asked Mansor to cancel the activity,” he added.

'DAP double standards'

Oh expressed his regret over the “double standards” practised by DAP.

He wants to know how Ng and his boss, Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng, view the event to be held in Jawi which “clashes” with the Chinese cultural activity often dubbed as the community’s Valentine’s Night.

“Are they brave enough to ask their coalition partner to cancel the quarter-marathon to show respect to the Chinese community,” he demanded.

“Ng is only good at blaming the BN and the Chinese community but kowtows to PKR and PAS,” added the state Gerakan Youth chief.

To drive home his point, Oh showed a videoclip on the episode where Ng led a team of Pakatan Rakyat members to protest against the Penang Run.

Oh said it is obvious that Ng “had acted wrongly and irresponsibly when causing disturbances” in front of Gerakan’s office.
