In coming to the prime minister’s defence, the former Selangor menteri besar said he is confident Najib (
right
) will serve to the fullest extent of his term, a move which "deserves commendation".
“This is an important democratic note for the country. The prime minister chose to abandon his privilege to call for a snap election,” Mohd Khir wrote in his blog today.
“Hasn’t the opposition always complained that they do not have enough time to campaign and accused Barisan National of unprofessionalism for announcing a snap election?
“Now that everyone knows when the election will be, there is no longer any element of surprise, Pakatan (Rakyat) is still not satisfied. What do they really want?”
Two-thirds majority 'not easy'
At the earliest, he said he suspects Najib will wait until after the four-year anniversary of his premiership on April 3, to announce the dissolution of Parliament.
The former opposition leader in Pakatan-led Selangor also dismissed accusations that Najib delayed calling for nationwide polls for fear of losing.
He claimed that research and observations by various parties, such as BN machinery, political analysts and independent observers, have indicated that BN will return to power with an even bigger win than in 2008.
He is confident the BN chairperson is striving to ensure a minimum two-thirds majority.
Even so, Mohd Khir pointed out this is no easy task for the PM as the latter had inherited a weak government and had one less year to serve the nation.
It is also possible, he further said, that the PM was trying to prevent Pakatan from pulling any unethical stunts to derail the election process and create strife, such as by delaying the dissolution of the Selangor, Penang and Kedah assemblies.
The term of the ruling federal government officially ends on April 28 and the general election must be called within 60 days from that date.
Come midnight today, the Negri Sembilan assembly will be the first to automatically dissolve , following the lapse of its five-year tenure since the historic 2008 general election.
The Selangor government had stated that it will not go for early dissolution , but will wait until April 22, should Parliament remain undissolved by then.
